Bologna coach Vincenzo Italiano spoke at a press conference on the eve of the crucial home match against Lille in the Champions League.

Vincenzo Italiano, coach of Bologna, addressed the media ahead of the fifth round of the Champions League, where they will host Lille at Dall’Ara.

The Bolognese club is still seeking their first victory and, most importantly, their first goal in the top European competition.

Bologna, Italiano’s Words

Does Bologna still believe in qualification?

“We believe, and we’ve talked a lot about it, in the possibility of filling that goal box, because honestly it bothers us. We’ve had the chance to score, with clear opportunities, and tomorrow we want to fill that box and also get the first victory. We’ve prepared to achieve this historic success and we want to keep this journey alive, starting tomorrow to be more effective.”

Pobega’s expulsion influenced the last match. What did you say to the player?

“What happened in Rome heavily penalizes the outcome of a match and the team, you always have to use your head, in all situations. I already told him after the match that I was sorry, for us it’s a commandment not to put the team in difficulty with foolish situations. I’m talking about naive yellow and red cards. The player was sorry, dejected, he addressed this to the team and I’m happy about it. It must not happen again, it’s the second time we’ve been in such big trouble and it becomes tough. But the player is intelligent, he knows what I ask, and I’m convinced he will learn the lesson.”

How important is tomorrow’s match?

“Tomorrow is important, there are 4 games left. If the experts are right, that with 7-8-9 points you can advance, we are still in the mix. Tomorrow will be another mountain to climb but we’ll try with all our means and all our will.”

What do you think of Lille and Bologna’s group?

“Lille is a team with top-level players, strong players. They’re doing well in the league, as you all know. It will be a tough match also because of how they play, these are teams that don’t hold back. They’re aggressive, they bring a lot of men above the ball line. I expect great pace and quality, so we also need to raise our level because to compete at certain levels you need a very high level.”

What does Urbanski lack to play more?

“A young player, a 2004-born who still has a lot to learn. He’s part of our squad and has to fight to earn a starting spot. Whenever he’s been called upon, he’s always done his job, but there are many players and there’s great competition. He has to push hard to earn his bread.”

How is Skorupski?

“He can play, he had a strong flu that kept him out for three days. Now he’s back, he’s fine and available.”

Will you calculate the lineup?

“For me, only tomorrow matters at this moment, even though we have to consider the great effort we made in Rome. Today, some players were still tired, but the focus is only on Lille because we have a great need to perform at our best and get a result. Tomorrow we need people who can guarantee intensity and pace because the match requires it.”

Lille is dangerous up front, with Zhegrova and David.

“We’ve seen some images, what stands out is the great effectiveness they have in the final third. It’s a team with high quality, and up front Lille is very dangerous. They’re a team that creates and proposes, Zhegrova in terms of effectiveness is a dangerous player who comes inside the field and knows how to score.”

How is Ndoye? Can he play tomorrow?

“He’s recovered, he’ll use a special shin guard for his problem. Before the break, he was in great condition, even though he worked separately he has minutes in his legs. The problem was in his shin, but I think it’s resolved, he trained with the team yesterday and today and pushed hard.”

Can Ferguson get minutes?

“I don’t know, it doesn’t depend on the type of match… He also needs to start performing as well as he does in training. The game plan in Rome included more minutes for him, unfortunately everything fell through. The only way is to start putting him in consistently and soon it will be done.”

In the league, Odgaard has provided balance as an attacking midfielder. Why hasn’t he found his form in the Champions League yet?

“Beyond Odgaard, Orsolini, Castro, Ndoye have grown… The full team has improved offensively. Tomorrow we’ll see, in matches where strategically reaching the end and making some calculations can bring results, so we’ll see if we approach the match with an extra midfielder or striker.”

How is Dallinga? Could this be his match?

“There are moments and dynamics that are part of this sport. I believe that Dallinga, especially in the Champions League, has had some good opportunities in terms of playing time and chances. I hope he’s like ketchup, when you squeeze hard it comes pouring out. Sometimes it’s moments, even a lucky goal can change everything. He needs to stay calm and continue to have goal-scoring opportunities, tomorrow we’ll see how Castro is and how we recover.”

Advancing to the next round would be equivalent to the two finals made with Fiorentina?

“We still have hopes of getting points and trying to qualify, if the calculations are correct. We want to try and we have to do our best to unlock ourselves with goals and victories. We’ll try, we also need a bit of personal pride. These four matches played have already given us a lot.”

Roma, a team with a dual identity: struggles in Europe

AS Roma started their journey in the Europa League rather negatively, with 2 defeats in the first 3 games. However, their performance in the league is quite different.

The home defeat against Viktoria Plzen left a bitter taste, along with some perplexity. Gasperini’s team has struggled to get going in the Europa League and has lost both home games so far. There have been too many defensive mistakes, which once again have cost the Giallorossi dearly.

Against Lille, it was Tsimikas who made a naive error that led to the French goal, while in yesterday’s game, it was young Ziolkowski who made the mistake and was substituted by Gasperini after just half an hour. While the defense seems to be the strong point of this team in the league, they are making too many mistakes and lack precision in the Europa League.

Roma, a sterile attack

Another rather evident problem, highlighted by the coach in the post-match interview, is the sterility of the attack. Apart from the Argentine Soulé, who has scored 3 goals in the league, the rest of the attack is struggling to perform.

Dovbyk and Ferguson seem out of place: two physically heavy players, rather clumsy with the ball at their feet, who are struggling to find the back of the net. The Ukrainian was booed off the Olimpico pitch yesterday, and every touch of the ball by the Irishman was met with loud grumbling from the entire stadium.

Dybala scored his first goal of the season from a penalty, but more is expected from him. Finally, Bailey is proving to be in form and able to make an impact, having come on in the last two games and igniting the Olimpico with his plays.

Gasperini must find a solution and hope to mentally recover his two strikers, who currently seem demoralized and disconnected from the team.

Roma-Viktoria Plzen 1-2, Czech surprise at the Olimpico – Football style

Tonight, at the Olimpico, the third day of the Europa League was animated by the Roma-Viktoria Plzen match: here’s how it went.

Not even a minute in, Artem Dobvyk almost scores a goal against the away team, but the shot is too central.

The match starts with a few too many errors from Hermoso and Wesley, and a proactive attitude from Viktoria Plzen, who repeatedly tries to score in the first few minutes, forcing Mile Svilar to make a miraculous save.

The visitors press high, while Roma tries to regroup mainly relying on Soulé, who shoots centrally. Shortly after, with determination and speed, Viktoria Plzen takes the lead thanks to a goal from Adu, who also eludes Svilar’s defense. A negative trend for Roma as, just 3 minutes after the first goal, they concede again through Souaré.

25 minutes into the game, Roma is losing at home 2-0. Speed is needed, so Gasperini sends Rensch to warm up on the sidelines, while El Shaarawy prepares to come on. Meanwhile, Koné raises the technical level of the game with feints and ball possession that make us hope he won’t leave for Juventus in January in an exchange for Koopmeiners.

At the 30th minute, Ziolkowski is substituted by Il Faraone. One minute later, Wesley attempts a through ball but the opposing goal remains unbreached. The goal for the Magica must be to score at least one goal before the end of the first half. At the 40th minute, the situation is still complex: meanwhile, Koné is down and receiving treatment, and Dybala tries to change the tide with a very wide shot that is easily blocked. El Shaarawy also does his job with a shot too high over the crossbar, but the attempt is commendable.

The real opportunity comes at the 45th minute, with the corner taken by Dybala ending up directly in the hands of goalkeeper Jedlicka. The last act of the first half is a mistimed cross attempted at the last minute by Wesley. But the Brazilian still has a long way to go to find coordination.

The second half begins with a new substitution: Niccolò Pisilli comes on for Manu Koné. An audacious substitution that raises doubts about the condition of the French midfielder.

At the 53rd minute, the referee checks for a possible penalty and awards it to Roma, giving them a great opportunity to close the gap of two goals. The Joya doesn’t disappoint: he shoots to the right corner of the goal, cool as usual. With Roma 1-2, El Shaarawy also tries to shake things up, while on the sidelines Gasperini prepares two aces: Ndicka and Bailey.

In this second half, Wesley appears more focused on the goal, as if the coach had reprimanded him in the locker room. Roma, however, continues to lack precision, with Soulé missing a good shot from outside the box at the 65th minute.
In the end, only Bailey comes on, replacing Celik. While for the away team, number 24 Abel comes on. Gasperini goes all in, choosing to also replace Dovbyk with Ferguson. And the surplus of attackers also requires the change Soulé-Ndicka.

Despite the coach’s efforts, Ferguson fails to make an impact in this game, replicating the clumsy movements of Dovbyk seen at the end of the first half.

For Plzen, Spacil and Adu come off, while Bello and Zeljkovic come on. At the 86th minute, Bailey also tries his luck with a very long shot that misses.

The balance of this match is that Roma still has a long road ahead of them, requiring strict discipline to find the precision and composure in front of goal that they often tend to lose, both in the league and in Europe. Dybala confirms himself as the team’s savior, despite his structural weaknesses, and also the good Svilar, who is not to blame for those conceded goals.

Some days of hard work now await the Giallorossi.
