Eleventh appointment with “What are you watching?” the weekly column of Calciostyle dedicated to the 2024/2025 Serie A Women’s Championship.
The women’s football movement in Italy in recent years is gaining more and more space, attracting the interest of millions of fans who live the sport in our beloved country. Although there is still a vast majority of people who “snub” this category, in recent seasons there have been several events and facts that have brought women’s football to a very high level.
We cannot fail to mention the transition to professionalism (1st July 2022) reaching milestones that until a few years ago were unthinkable, such as reaching the quota of 40 thousand spectators for a single match.
Compared to other European countries (Spain and England in particular), the difference in terms of audience and interest surrounding women’s football is, to use a famous Roman expression, “still a dear friend,” meaning very significant.
By also exploiting the irreverence of the column’s title “Macché, te lo guardi?”, we want to shed further light on a reality that is increasingly taking hold in our beloved country: women’s football. In the end, we Italians are only interested in watching and being able to comment on the game of football, regardless of who is playing.
Women’s Serie A, recap of the eleventh matchday
In the eleventh matchday of Women’s Serie A, the ones smiling the most are Juventus and Inter. In fact, the two teams make the most of the half-steps of Fiorentina and Roma (both held to a draw) and extend their lead in the standings, with the Nerazzurre overtaking Viola to take second place.
A comfortable victory for the Vecchia Signora away against Como, while Inter settles for the goal of Magull to defeat Napoli. In the opening game of the women’s football weekend, Lazio and Sampdoria could only manage a dull draw.
Now it’s time for the international break, with Italy facing a luxury friendly against Germany on Monday, December 2nd at 8:30 PM at Ruhrstadion in Bochum.
Lazio hits the Dorian wall: a draw that benefits no one
Lazio – Sampdoria 0 – 0
The survival clash between Lazio and Sampdoria at the Fersini stadium in Formello ends in a draw. A draw that serves no purpose, with the home team remaining anchored to the lower part of the table and the Dorian side still occupying the last position in the rankings, also due to a poor offensive phase with only 3 goals scored.
As predicted, Lazio dominated the game with Sampdoria defending their goal. The real plot of the match unfolds from the early minutes, with the Biancocelesti creating opportunities against the Doria goalkeeper Tampieri, who put on an impressive performance throughout the match.
The home team came close to scoring several times with Le Bihan, Piemonte, and Visentin, but they had to surrender to the brilliant performance of the opposing goalkeeper. In the second half, a lifeline came to tilt the game in favor of Lazio: in the 58th minute, Sampdoria was reduced to ten men due to the expulsion, for a second yellow card, of Pisani, who committed a reckless foul on Piemonte during a counterattack.
The numerical superiority of the Biancocelesti didn’t last long as Piemonte was also sent off early. The Italian striker, in an attempt to control the ball, raised her leg too high according to the referee, resulting in a dangerous play and a second yellow card.
The match continued with the same pattern seen throughout the game: Lazio attacking to find a goal, while Sampdoria remained defensive. The best opportunity for the team coached by Grassadonia came to Visentin 40 seconds before the end of the fourth and final minute of stoppage time. A desperate long ball forward caught the Blucerchiata defense off guard, leaving the Biancoceleste captain one-on-one with Tampieri.
Number 99 was hypnotized by the goalkeeper’s movement and wasted the biggest chance of the match. Lazio now has 7 points, while Sampdoria remains in last place with only 4 points collected.
A Magull-dominated game: Inter climbs to second place
Inter – Napoli 1 – 0
8′ Magull (I)
The negative period for Napoli in the offensive zone continues: only three goals scored in the league have earned them the title of the worst attack in Serie A alongside Sampdoria. A real crisis confirmed by the following statistic: for the first time in their history, Napoli failed to score in 7 consecutive league matches.
Capitalizing on this and more is Inter coached by Piovani. The home team started strong and found the opening goal just 8 minutes into the game through Lina Magull. The former Bayern Munich player seems to have found her form after scoring last week against Sampdoria. A well-executed play by the Nerazzurre led to a cross from the right by Bowen finding the head of the German, left unmarked at the far post, who made no mistake from close range to beat Bacic.
Inter continued to create offensive opportunities, coming close to extending their lead, but their lack of precision and effectiveness in front of goal prevented further goals. The match progressed with little threat from Napoli in attack, with Runarsdottir, the Inter goalkeeper, having little to do.
An important victory for Inter, capitalizing on the missteps of Fiorentina and Roma, as they climbed to second place in the standings, 5 points behind leaders Juventus. It was the third defeat in the last four matches for the Neapolitan club, who remain at 6 points after 11 games.
AC Milan women never give up: comeback against Fiorentina
Fiorentina – Milan 2 – 2
9′ Janogy (F), 13′ own goal Ijeh (M), 47′ Arrigoni (M), 84′ Karczewska (M)
A missed opportunity for Fiorentina under coach De La Fuente, as they squander a two-goal lead against Milan at the Viola Park, losing their second position in the standings to Inter.
A perfect start for La Viola, who found themselves up by two goals within a quarter of an hour thanks to the genius of Bonfantini, who had a hand in both goals.
A lightning counterattack 2 vs 1 with Bonfantini passing to Janogy in the middle. The Viola striker entered the box, outplayed the Rossoneri defender, and scored with a precise low shot past Giuliani. Four minutes later, La Viola doubled their lead: Bonfantini ran into the box, dribbled past her opponent, and crossed for Severini to score. However, it was Ijeh who clumsily put the ball into her own net.
Fiorentina continued to create dangerous opportunities, flirting several times with a third goal that would have virtually sealed the match. However, they failed to capitalize, and Milan woke up in the second half. The vulnerable defense seen in the first half transformed thanks to substitutions by Bakker, allowing the Rossoneri to equalize.
Immediately after the break, Diavolo reduced the deficit with the newly entered Arrigoni, who scored her first goal for Milan. The 2004-born player was served on the edge of the box, fooled the Viola defender, and fired a shot past Fiskerstrand. The match-winning goal came six minutes from full time from a penalty kick.
Erzen was fouled in the box by Renzotti, and the referee had no doubts. Karczewska stepped up to take the penalty but was stopped by the Viola goalkeeper. However, she was quickest to react and scored on the rebound.
In stoppage time, Fiorentina had a chance to take the lead again, but both Janogy and Boquete missed great opportunities after a well-served ball by Bonfantini.
An important draw for Milan as they close in on Como, while Fiorentina paid the price for a poor second half, losing their second position in the standings.
Roma wastes chances: two dropped points against Sassuolo
Sassuolo – Roma 1 – 1
10′ Prugna (S), 35′ Giugliano (R)
Roma missed a chance to capitalize on Fiorentina’s stumble and had to settle for a draw against Sassuolo, dropping two crucial points in their pursuit of Juventus.
A bitter draw for the reigning champions who wasted numerous opportunities, especially in the second half. Roma continued to struggle with their finishing, a major issue for Spugna’s side since the start of the season, resulting in dropped points, especially against Sassuolo (1-1 in both matches).
The match at the Ricci stadium in Sassuolo started poorly for the visiting team, with the Neroverdi taking the lead through Prugna‘s magic. Following a corner kick, the Roma defense cleared the ball, but Prugna unleashed a powerful right-footed shot from outside the box that found the net.
Roma responded and began to create chances, eventually equalizing just over 30 minutes into the game with a penalty converted by the Roma captain, Manuela Giugliano. Giacinti was fouled in the box by Prugna, and the Roma number 10 stepped up to score and level the match.
The second half mirrored the first, with Roma desperately seeking the lead but failing to capitalize on heavy misses in front of goal, especially with Glionna
Positive signs for Sassuolo, who have built on their recent performances. Out of the 6 points collected in the league, five have come in the last three matches.
No Champions League hangover: Juventus doesn’t forgive
Como – Juventus 1 – 4
7′ Kerr (C), 11′ Bonansea (J), 31′ Girelli (J), 45+2′ Caruso (J), 73′ Schatzer (J)
Juventus didn’t let the tough loss against Arsenal in the Women’s Champions LeagueComo.
However, the hosts broke the deadlock with a well-executed team play. Petzelberger played a through ball to Nischler, who backheeled it to leave Kerr alone in front of Peyraud-Magnin. The Scottish striker made no mistake with a low shot from the penalty spot. Juventus responded quickly, equalizing four minutes later.
A cross from the left by Boattin found Bonansea with a header to beat the late-coming Gilardi and score. From that moment, the Vecchia Signora took control of the game in search of the go-ahead goal. The lead was extended with a header at the half-hour mark. This time, Girelli found the net for her 7th goal in 10 appearances. Krumbiegel crossed precisely to the far post where the Juventus striker outjumped her marker and powered a header past an unsuspecting Gilardi.
Juventus made it 3-1 just before halftime. An energetic Cantore dispossessed the Como goalkeeper and found Caruso in front of goal, who confidently scored her fifth goal of the season.
In the second half, Juventus continued their dominance and sealed the victory with a fourth goal. Coming 15 minutes from the end, the 2005-born Schatzer found the net. Bergamaschi was blocked from the left side of the penalty area but decided to play the ball to the onrushing Juventus midfielder, who produced a perfectly placed shot that hit the post and went in.
It was an important victory for Juventus, capitalizing on the slip-ups of Fiorentina and Roma, extending their lead at the top of the table with 29 points. A heavy result for Como, who still showed promise from the start of the season.
