Inter, emergency in defense against Fiorentina: the latest updates
Views: 22
Speaking to Gazzetta dello Sport, former Inter midfielder Lothar Matthäus talked about Inter, focusing on some players.
German, born in 1961, with a past at Inter from 1988 to 1992, the former Lothar Matthäus played a total of 153 matches in Serie A, Coppa Italia, and UEFA Cup, scoring 53 goals and providing 13 assists.
Asked by Gazzetta dello Sport about his former club, he stated that he still follows it from Germany, many years after retiring.
Here is what he declared to the well-known newspaper.
Inter, Lothar Matthäus interview
About the club
Regarding the club, Matthäus has a great impression: “A unique mix of experienced players and young talents, with a coach who has found the right formula. They are at the top in all departments, in Europe and not just in Italy.
I am really happy with the level that “my” team has reached, but this work has been going on for a long time, it is not certainly a novelty of this year. For some time now, Inter has been competing with everyone: they are getting past the Champions League rounds without playoffs and can go all the way in Europe. Additionally, of course, they can win the Serie A again, which has become really fun and more level…”.
About Serie A
For the former midfielder, it is a league in constant evolution: “I follow it in general, especially on Sundays on TV when I am at home. Your football continues to grow, and the league is very balanced, with surprises like Lazio and Fiorentina and the return of Napoli. But, from what I see from the outside, perhaps the strongest team has become Atalanta.”
About Inter’s clashes with German teams
“RB Leipzig is having many problems, they have dropped many points in Bundesliga, while Bayer Leverkusen, who is waiting for Inter, is much more dangerous: for me, they are the only team that has a chance to challenge Bayern Munich. Now Xabi Alonso has returned to his level, and that is not insignificant…”
About Leverkusen
According to Matthäus, the club is getting stronger: “They have the same coach, the same players, and have even added some quality pieces: they should be even stronger! Simply, last year everything was going well, they had the confidence that allowed them to win even in the last minute.
This season is different… However, I see Leverkusen improving significantly, as seen in the Champions League with Red Bull Salzburg: I hope they are at the top competing for the good of our league”.
About Calhanoglu’s role
In the match against Leverkusen, for Matthäus, Hakan Calhanoglu “is the key player. Before joining Inter, he did not make a difference at this level, but evidently, he has found the perfect club for him. There is a right connection with the coach and teammates: everyone truly believes in Hakan, and that makes the difference.
Like when I was at Inter and others trusted me: they passed me the ball like they do now with Calha… Too bad about the penalty against Napoli, but that night he still scored. And even in the national team, he has a different status: captain’s armband, number 10, all things that make you special. But a lot of credit goes to Inzaghi.”
The credit to the coach, besides finding him the right position, is that “he is doing what Julian Nagelsmann did with Toni Kroos in the last European Championship: he put him at the center of everything. Simone has told all the players, whatever their task, to look at Calha first”.
About Inter’s super midfield
“To achieve these results for many years means that the squad is complete as a whole, not just the midfield. From the first to the 22nd, everyone knows what to do, that makes the difference. Additionally, the team has a great defense and a world-class attack, with the duo Lautaro–Thuram.
And I also add Arnautovic, who is decisive in a different way. In the last 20-25 minutes, his physique is needed to hold onto the ball”.
About the forwards
“No, the duo works perfectly, the balance has not changed from last year: here everyone always needs the other, in a way they “take advantage” of each other. If you have someone like Lautaro in front, then it’s a red alert for defenses: they focus on the Argentine and so, maybe, the Frenchman takes advantage.
Ultimately, it is the teamwork and exchange that they do perfectly in the Bundesliga with Hugo Ekitiké and Omar Marmoush, the two forwards of Eintracht Frankfurt. Follow them…”.

Today, in Roma-Genoa, the Giallorossi take the field renewed compared to last fall, with a new coach and all the intentions of bringing home the crucial 3 points.
Genoa has also changed a lot, just like their opponent, changing coaches from Gilardino to Vieira, and they are just one point behind Roma in the standings (23 points).
Let’s experience together the emotions of this match, which means a lot to both teams on the field.
Roma-Genoa, the first half
The first ball belongs to Roma, to Artem Dovbyk. Just two minutes into the game, Roma finds their first opportunity with Saelemaekers, who goes too wide.
The ball remains in Roma’s possession as they try to build from the back with Hummels but then it ends up in Genoa’s hands.
The first foul of the game, at 6′, involves Koné. Shortly after, Dovbyk goes down.
At 8′, Frendrup fouls Paulo Dybala: Roma earns the first free kick of the match. The Argentine takes a sumptuous shot that hits the crossbar.
At 14′, Angelino and Dovbyk try to create a goal-scoring opportunity, but the ball ends up in the possession of the Rossoblu.
Roma earns a corner: Paredes is ready to take it, but the ball ends up in the hands of the Genoa goalkeeper.
The first yellow card of the match goes to Vasquez for a tactical foul on Mancini at 18′. Free kick for Roma.
At 21′, a very dangerous shot by Hummels hits the crossbar.
At 24′, Genoa comes alive, until they lose the ball to Roma. And it’s here that Dovbyk takes a shot straight into the goal and scores the first goal of the match! It’s 1-0.
Genoa tries to regain possession, but several mistakes often return the ball to the Giallorossi.
At 29′, Bani is down. At 31′, he leaves the field due to a suspected injury. At 32′, he is replaced by Sabelli.
At 32′, on the free kick taken by Moretti, Masini scores the equalizer.
The game changes pace, Roma appears more weakened. At 36′, it’s possession for the Rossoblu, with Pinamonti going down and being assisted by the medical staff.
At 40′, chaos ensues: Pellegrini and Zanoli are down. The Roma captain temporarily leaves the field.
At 43′, Genoa believes, but the ball is saved by Paredes and returned to Roma.
At 45′, a foul on Dybala gives the home team a new free kick, to be taken by Paredes, saved by the goalkeeper and then followed up by the Argentine.
There are two minutes of added time, but they don’t change the situation, fixed at 1-1.
This was a first half devoid of great emotions, in which both teams tried to maintain or gain possession of the ball and build vertically. A substitution for Vieira, none for Ranieri.
The second half
The second half starts with a Roma substitution: Pellegrini out, El Shaarawy in.
A foul on Dybala earns a free kick, taken by Paredes, which goes far and is intercepted by the Rossoblu.
At 53′, the game becomes tight, with both teams intent on winning throw-ins and gaining ground.
At 54′, Genoa gets a free kick which is almost turned into a counterattack by El Shaarawy.
Thanks to Saelemaekers, at 56′, Roma earns a corner. Dybala takes the kick and the action is interrupted shortly after because Sabelli goes down: Paredes is booked for an elbow.
A handball penalty is not called: the entire Olimpico stadium whistles. Shortly after, El Shaarawy ignites the Curva Sud by scoring the second Giallorossi goal.
At 62′, there is a golden opportunity for Roma, but Dovbyk can’t reach a ball that is just too long.
At 65′, Genoa fails to capitalize on a corner opportunity, with a shot by Masini going high over the goal.
Thorsby exits and Ekhator enters, Zanoli exits and Venturino enters.
At 72′, the penalty for El Shaarawy in the penalty area is not called and the Olimpico protests again. Shortly after, an own goal by Leali brings the score to 3-1!
Two substitutions for Roma: Saelemaekers and Hummels out, Celik and Pisilli in.
At 81′, after several minutes of fruitless passes, Roma manages to defend their goal and run into the opponent’s half, where Pisilli misses what would have been a beautiful goal.
At this point in the match, a graphic shows that Masini, with over 11 km covered, is the player who has run the most: among the top 6, only Koné is from Roma.
Important substitutions for Roma: Dybala and Dovbyk out, Soulé and Shomurodov in. Meanwhile,
For Genoa, Moretti exits and Kasa enters.
The Giallorossi Uzbek makes himself known at 87′, where he attempts a precise but weak shot that ends up in Leali’s hands.
There are 4 minutes of added time: Roma must defend their substantial lead at all costs.
At 93′, Soulé almost scores the 4-1 goal.
Then the final whistle blows and the curtain falls on Roma’s triumph.
