Women’s Coppa Italia: starts today from Formello with the first leg matches of the quarter-finals. Eight contenders for the 2024-25 Frecciarossa trophy.

Between today, Wednesday 15th, and tomorrow, Thursday 16th January, the first leg matches of the Women’s Coppa Italia will be played.

The teams that have scored the most goals overall in the two matches at the end of the second leg will qualify for the semi-finals. In case of a tie, two extra periods of 15 minutes each and possible penalty shootouts.

The second leg matches will be played between 28th and 30th January.

Today’s Challenges

The first teams to take the field at 6:00 pm are Juventus, the undefeated league leader, visiting Lazio in Formello, coming off a defeat in the league against Sassuolo.

The other match at 8:45 pm sees Napoli and Roma facing each other at the Giuseppe Piccolo stadium.

Despite the last league defeat against Inter, Spugna’s team is the reigning Italian champion and the trophy holder. Additionally, the Giallorosse have just lifted the Supercoppa in La Spezia.

On the other hand, the Neapolitans have only collected one point in their last seven league matches.

Thursday’s Milanese Coppa Italia

At 6:00 pm at Vismara-Puma House of Football, it’s time for Milan and Fiorentina, while at 8:45 pm at Arena Civica Gianni Brera, Inter and Sassuolo take the field.

Viola in full crisis: two consecutive defeats in this early 2025. However, the Rossonere are also in a battle with Como for the last useful place for the Scudetto pool.

Fourteenth appointment with “Macché te lo guardi?”, the weekly column of Calciostyle dedicated to the 2024/2025 Serie A women’s championship.

The women’s football movement in Italy in recent years is increasingly gaining space, attracting the interest of millions of fans who live the sport in our dear Boot. Despite there still being a vast majority of people who “snub” this category, in recent seasons there have been several events and facts that have elevated women’s football to a very high level.

We cannot ignore the transition to professionalism (July 1, 2022) and reaching milestones that were unthinkable just a few years ago, such as reaching a quota of 40 thousand spectators for a single match.

Compared to other European countries (Spain and England above all), the difference in terms of audience and interest revolving around women’s football is, using a popular Roman expression, “still at dear friend,” meaning very wide.

By also exploiting the irreverence of the column title “Macché, te lo guardi?”, we want to shed further light on a reality that is increasingly taking hold in our beloved country: women’s football. In the end, what matters to us Italians is just watching and being able to comment on the game, regardless of who is playing.

Inter is the anti-Juve: former Serturini gives the first victory in the Capital

Roma – Inter 1 – 2

To close this first day of 2025, the big match at Tre Fontane between Roma and Inter is the highlight. A kind of challenge to be the anti-Juve, as the two teams are tied in second place in the standings, behind the Vecchia Signora.

In freezing cold weather, an open match unfolds between two teams eager to take home three crucial points. The away team starts better, and thanks to their suffocating pressing, they recover the ball in a dangerous area and in a 1 vs. 4 situation, find the lead. Serturini picks up the ball lost by Greggi and centrally serves Polli, who unleashes a rocket that nestles just below the crossbar.

The vehement response from the reigning Italian champions does not take long, and after just 4 minutes, they bring the game back to a draw. Mistake by Runarsdottir, who in clearing the ball hits Giacinti, recovers the loose ball, Giugliano, who centrally serves Glionna.

The Roma player fakes the shot and then serves the perfect run of the former Thogersen, who with a precise right-footed shot beats the Inter goalkeeper.

In the 24th minute, the game changes completely. Collision in the penalty area of Inter with Bowen kicking Giacinti, who is already on the ground. The Roma striker loses her temper and retaliates: the referee, without a second thought, shows a straight red to the Yellow-Reds’ number 9. The bench and the entire Roman arena are furious at the lack of sanction for the Inter defender (the coach’s words at the end of the match will be very harsh). A very heavy expulsion as, besides leaving Spugna‘s side with 10 for over an hour, Giacinti will also have to miss the big match, scheduled for next Sunday, against Juventus.

From here on, the match changes with Inter controlling the game, without ever really posing a threat to the goalkeeper defended by Kresche. In the second half, the story remains the same with Roma, who, despite being a player down, tries somehow to be dangerous on the counterattack, mainly thanks to the tireless legs of Greggi.

However, it is the former player Serturini who condemns the Yellow-Reds to defeat in the 55th minute. A masterful move by Mr. Piovani‘s team that arrives on the right with Bugeja who puts a soft ball on the far post for the unmarked Serturini who coordinates perfectly and with a flying right-footed shot beats Kresche. The new Inter lead cuts the legs off Roma, who fails to pose a further threat until the final whistle.

A big win for Inter, beating Roma for the first time at Tre Fontane and positioning themselves as the anti-Juve. A tough defeat for the Yellow-Reds, with a big match against Juventus looming, now 10 points ahead.

Women’s Serie A, recap of the fourteenth round

Back on the field. After the Christmas break, the Women’s Serie A returns after a month. There were surprises in this first match of 2025 with Como defeating Fiorentina 2-0, with a brace from Kerr, who had lost in the Italian Supercup final against Roma. Juventus continues its march by easily defeating Sampdoria in the first half, while Sassuolo secures a crucial win in the relegation battle against Lazio. A red-and-black avalanche overwhelms Napoli, while in the day’s big match between Roma and Inter, the Nerazzurre come out on top with their first victory in the Capital, on the Giallorossa side.

New year, same Juventus

The Old Lady picks up where it left off last year: already in the eighth minute, they take the lead with a goal from Bergamaschi. The goal scorer must thank the spectacular play of Krumbiegel, who receives on the left and with a fantastic nutmeg bypasses the direct opponent and scores. From there, it is too easy to serve the Bianconeri winger in the area, who only has to tap the ball into the net.

Como’s Coup, Kerr Downs Fiorentina

The Como couldn’t have asked for a better start to the year, defeating Fiorentina 2-0, with goals from Kerr, fresh off their defeat in the Italian Supercup against Roma. The first-ever victory for the Larian team against La Viola.

The match is played openly, at a high pace, with Fiorentina starting strong. In the first six minutes of play, the Tuscan team reaches the goal area three times, first with Janogy, then with Severini, and finally with Bonfantini: all three are denied by Gilardi, who lowers a real shutter in front of her goal.

Como ventures forward around the half-hour mark with a long-range shot from Nischler, just above the defended crossbar by Fiskerstrand. The game is decided in the final part of the match when Kerr scores the goal of the week, with a powerful right-footed shot from outside the box hitting the crossbar and going into the net. Strong protests from Fiorentina as the action took place while Curmark was down: Bonfantini pays the price with an expulsion for dissent.

Fiorentina‘s final assault does not yield the desired results, and as time runs out, Kerr scores her second goal of the match, sealing the match at the Ferruccio Trabattoni. A lightning-fast counterattack by Kerr, who dribbles the entire field, beats her direct opponent, and unleashes a rocket shot into the near post that Fiskerstrand cannot stop.

The second consecutive victory for Como brings them closer to the fourth position, currently held by La Viola. Philtjens’ Magic Gives Sassuolo Victory in Relegation Battle

The first relegation battle of 2025 is won by Sassuolo in the home match against Lazio. In a rather dilapidated field, an open match is played between two teams ready to attack.

Straight from the start, the home match for Lazio takes a bad turn. In the 17th minute, D’Auria commits a foul on Dhont in the box, and the referee shows a straight red card. As if that wasn’t enough, two minutes later, the Neroverdi take the lead with a gem from Philtjens.

In the second half, the game stabilizes at a slower pace, with Lazio remaining compact and searching for the equalizer. The Biancocelesti captain continues to fight with a determined solo run into the penalty area, but fails to find a free teammate for the rebound shot.

The equalizer does not come, and with 8 minutes left in the match, Sassuolo seals the victory with Monterubbiano. A touch from Hagemann finds the number 27, who entered in the second half, and she fires a precise left-footed shot past Cetinja.

The match ends with the Neroverdi team confirming their excellent form (only one loss in the last 6 games) and overtaking Lazio in the standings, moving away from the relegation zone.

Milan’s “6” Power: Five Goals in 45 Minutes against Napoli
