“The protests are about Atalanta’s first goal, scored by De Ketelaere. It’s not a push, but a support with both hands on Theo Hernandez: he helps himself by placing both hands on Theo’s shoulders and this helps him make the movement he wanted to make. Theo is also moved, he can’t intervene on the ball.

It’s an incident that reminds us a bit of what happened during Inter-Napoli. They are different incidents, but they have the same rationale: in one case, it’s a penalty given for minimal contact, on which the VAR cannot intervene because there is contact. In this case, the referee made a judgment on contact that occurred and the VAR cannot intervene in the same way. In these cases, the on-field evaluation prevails.

Explaining why the VAR did not intervene, in my opinion, it’s a goal to be disallowed on the field, because De Ketelaere’s support is definitely irregular, he leans with both arms on Theo Hernandez and the latter cannot make the movement he wanted to make, which was to clear the ball.”
