Juventus-Cagliari: the bianconeri’s Coppa Italia starts from the round of 16, scheduled at the Allianz Stadium against the Sardinians.
Contested and booed. The tactical masterpiece against Manchester City, helped not a little by a putrescent Guardiolismo on the verge of complete exhaustion, was swept away by the performance against Venice. Those surprised by this schizophrenia of performances evidently follow football myopically.
It’s one thing to play against the Citizens, with all the favoritism on one side and an opponent who always has your back: where you have to limit yourself (so to speak) to defend in an orderly manner and then break out with plenty of space ahead. It’s different to play against a team that on one hand has nothing to lose and on the other will fight tooth and nail to survive, aware that they have nothing to lose.
However, the aspect of motivation and mental resilience is fundamental. It’s easy to find motivation to face a Guardiola team on a challenging stage like the Champions League. It’s much less easy to immediately prepare mentally, just a few days later and with the adrenaline still in your body, for the league, when you’re up against a completely different opponent who has been thinking about you for a week.
This step of maturity is usually achieved by great teams and that’s where the core of the issue lies. Because Juventus, currently, is not (yet) a great team. The league is still long and Thiago Motta’s project under the Mole is explicitly a multi-year one. It would be a grave error of recentism to make judgments after the first six months of the first year, but there is still a factor to consider.
In Turin, on the Bianconeri side, at the moment the fourth place is openly discussed as the seasonal objective. For intellectual honesty, it must be acknowledged that the club’s stance was the same last year, but the damnatio memoriae that the new ownership carried out in the summer on Agnelli’s management and Allegriism aimed to sever ties with the past.
This entrepreneurial line was presented as a virtuous path, leading to take Madama to the “Next Level” by undertaking a kind of technical restoration. However, the truth is different, namely that the much-vaunted ruins were not there and have never been. The demonization of those who were there before brought disgraceful economic wastage, only to find themselves pursuing the same objectives as before.
After spending nearly 200 million on the market to prune the dead branches and create a team in the image and likeness of Motta, Juventus plays worse; has fewer points in the standings; and the same seasonal objectives. It will be a long journey (no doubt) and perhaps paved with satisfactions, but was a revolution really necessary in Turin?
Was it really fair to consider a third place in the standings and a Coppa Italia in the trophy cabinet as a disaster, only to find yourself six months later seeing that same result (so vilified last year, when there was someone on the bench representing a different and probably unacceptable way of seeing football) as a sort of lifeline?

AC Milan waste a great opportunity to consolidate their lead: from 1-0 to 1-2, they need the final minutes to avoid a sensational defeat. The risk of losing the top spot for Milan is now concrete.
It was supposed to be a quiet evening for the Rossoneri, an opportunity to strengthen their first place in the standings and face the midweek round with serenity. Instead, against a brave Pisa, the Rossoneri complicate their lives and have to thank Athekame, the author of the 2-2 in injury time, for avoiding an embarrassing loss.
AC Milan-Pisa 2-2: match analysis
The match started off on the right foot thanks to Leao’s goal after just seven minutes. But Allegri’s team, instead of closing the game, relaxed, showing presumption and lacking ruthlessness in front of goal. In the first half, Milan controlled but did not score, and Pisa stayed in the game.

In the second half, Gilardino played his trump card: Cuadrado’s entry changed everything. The Colombian won and scored the penalty for 1-1, his eighth goal in career against the Rossoneri, then inspired the counterattack that led Nzola to the sensational 2-1. Milan, confused and lacking clarity, tried to react, with Leao hitting the crossbar, Nkunku wasting a possible lead.
Only in injury time did the equalizer come, signed by Athekame, avoiding a heavy defeat but not erasing the bitterness. Perhaps the Rossoneri paid for their lack of respect for the opponent, just as Allegri had warned before the start of the match.
A necessary reality check, because on Tuesday in Bergamo Milan risks not showing up as the league leaders.

Crazy night at San Siro: Pisa almost pulls off the upset, Rossoneri saved in stoppage time

Parma by Carlos Cuesta hosts Como by Fàbregas: a challenge between the two youngest coaches in Serie A, but with very different destinies at the moment.
Tomorrow afternoon, Parma will host Como in a fascinating and internationally flavored match: on one side Carlos Cuesta, on the other Cesc Fàbregas, the two youngest coaches in the league and compatriots. On paper, the projects of the two clubs seem similar: both focus on fresh ideas, ambitious coaches, and squads built on young players to be valued.
But the reality on the field tells a different story. While Como has confirmed the solidity and style seen in the last season, as demonstrated by the splendid victory against Juventus in the last round, Parma seems to be stuck, unable to find continuity and rhythm.
Rome, Italy 22.12.2024: Emanuele Valeri of Parma during Italian football championship Serie A Enilive 2024-2025 match AS Roma vs Parma Calcio at Stadio Olimpico in Rome.
Parma, confidence to regain
The main problem for Cuesta remains the lack of a clear playing identity. The yellow-blue team often appears lacking bite and struggles especially in the offensive phase, where it seems to overly depend on the individual plays of its best players.
The serious injuries of Ondrejka and Frigan have certainly complicated the plans, but the feeling is that more decisive action could have been taken in the summer transfer market, especially after the significant departures of Leoni, Bonny, and Sohm. Now Cuesta finds himself with a squad lacking quality and alternatives, while the management, despite reiterating confidence in their coach, cannot ignore the warning signs.
Another misstep could indeed raise doubts about the future of the Spanish coach, with fans finally asking for a solid performance and some signs from an attack so far too dependent on Pellegrino.
