Seventeenth appointment with “Macché te lo guardi?”, the weekly column by Calciostyle dedicated to the 2024/2025 Women’s Serie A championship.
The women’s football movement in Italy has been gaining more and more space in recent years, attracting the interest of millions of fans who follow the sport in our beloved country. Despite there still being a large majority of people who “snub” this category, in recent seasons there have been several events and developments that have elevated women’s football to a very high level.
We cannot ignore the transition to professionalism (July 1, 2022), reaching milestones that were unimaginable just a few years ago, such as attracting 40 thousand spectators for a single match.
Compared to other European countries (Spain and England in particular), the difference in terms of audience and interest in women’s football is, as a popular Roman expression goes, “still a dear friend,” meaning quite substantial.
By also leveraging the irreverence of the column’s title “Macché, te lo guardi?”, we want to shed further light on a reality that is increasingly taking hold in our beloved country: women’s football. In the end, as Italians, we are only interested in watching and being able to comment on the game of football, regardless of who plays it.
Women’s Serie A, recap of the seventeenth matchday
The seventeenth matchday of Women’s Serie A opens with Inter’s victory over Fiorentina with a clear 2-0, solidifying their second position in the standings. Roma had an easy time against Sampdoria, thanks to a superb performance by Giugliano, who scored a brace. Milan staged another comeback, just like last matchday, overturning the result and securing three crucial points for the Scudetto zone. Napoli, after the disappointment in the Coppa Italia against Roma, managed to hold Juventus to a draw, as the latter is going through a tough period.
Lastly, Lazio condemned Como to their third consecutive defeat and forced them to temporarily leave the Scudetto zone.
Red alert for Fiorentina: four defeats in the last 5 matches
Inter – Fiorentina 2 – 0
6′ Cambiaghi (I), 71′ Magull (I)
A very important victory for Inter under Piovani, who defeated Fiorentina 2-0, earning three valuable points to consolidate their second position, challenged by Roma. Against Fiorentina, the Nerazzurri started strong and took the lead with Cambiaghi’s header at the first real opportunity. A well-executed play with Serturini on the left, providing a soft cross for the Inter forward. Number 36 beat Faerge in the air to give Inter the lead.
A first half devoid of significant actions gave way to a more lively second half with Inter coming inches close to doubling their lead with Cambiaghi. Around the hour mark, the forward missed a golden opportunity served again by Serturini.
This was just a prelude to what was about to happen. A lightning counterattack by Piovani’s team led by Tomaselli, who ran the length of the field and played a through ball to Magull at the edge of the penalty area. The German striker struck with power, beating Fiskerstrand.
An important victory for Inter, closing in on Juventus, who were held to a draw by Napoli, and providing a strong response after the heavy defeat in the Coppa Italia against Sassuolo. A completely different situation for Fiorentina, who also faltered at the home of the Nerazzurri, confirming the rough patch De La Fuente’s team is going through.
Easy win for Roma: Giugliano shines
Roma – Sampdoria 4 – 0
18′, 41′ Giugliano (R), 55′ Corelli (R), 62′ Haavi (R)
A very easy victory for Roma, who crushed Sampdoria 4-0, with the latter never really in the game. A strong performance was needed to dispel the shadows looming over Spugna’s team after the heavy loss to Milan in the previous matchday and the lackluster draw in the Coppa Italia against an uninspiring Napoli.
The home team dominated, forcing the Blucerchiati to defend in their own half, and less than 20 minutes into the game, Roma took the lead through their captain. A crafted play reached the feet of the Roma number 10 centrally, who unleashed a clinical left-footed shot that found the top corner. Roma controlled the game and created several goal-scoring opportunities, with Giugliano doubling her personal tally five minutes before the end. A carbon copy of the first goal, with the former Milan midfielder scoring from the same position, this time with her right foot, beating Tampieri with a shot from outside the box.
In the second half, Roma gained even more ground, turning the match into a shooting gallery towards the Sampdoria goal. They scored their third at the 55th minute with Corelli, who netted her second consecutive league goal.
A left-wing gallop by Greggi, a low cross into the middle for the Roma winger, who controlled with her back to goal and turned with her right foot to find the top corner: Tampieri had no chance. Haavi added to the celebrations a few minutes later. Viens played a through ball to Giugliano, who entered the box and shot on target, the Sampdoria goalkeeper parried the shot but on the rebound, the quickest to react was the Norwegian, sealing the match definitively.
Important win for Roma, who remain on Juve’s trail in the title race, despite the gap. A lackluster performance from Sampdoria, after a couple of positive outings in the league.
Another day, another comeback: Milan’s apotheosis
Sassuolo – Milan 2 – 3
16′ Clelland (S), 22′ Philtjens (S), 24′ Vigilucci (M), 67′ Ijeh (M), 71′ Stokic (M)
After a come-from-behind victory against Roma last matchday, Milan repeated the feat and overturned the game against Sassuolo, overtaking Como in the standings and securing the last spot available for the Scudetto zone with one round remaining in the regular season.
Milan’s start was shocking. A deadly one-two by Sassuolo saw them take a two-goal lead within 6 minutes. In the 16th minute, the Neroverdi broke through the middle, with Clelland’s delicate touch beating the Milan goalkeeper. A significant misjudgment by Giuliani, who left her goal trying to make an impossible intervention.
The home team capitalized and struck again shortly after with Philtjens scoring her third goal of the season. A scramble outside the box saw the ball fall to Clelland, who attempted a repeat. The rebound fell to the Belgian player who beat Giuliani with an outstretched effort.
Milan responded quickly and pulled one back two minutes later through Vigilucci. Just like Sassuolo’s first goal, there was a goalkeeper error, this time by Durand. The Neroverde goalkeeper fumbled the innocuous cross from the left, leaving the ball there for Vigilucci to head in from close range, halving the deficit.
The second half continued at a frantic pace, and within 4 minutes, Milan turned the game around. Vigilucci was again in the spotlight: a shot inside the box by the Milan full-back was blocked by De Rita’s extended arm. The referee had no doubts and awarded a penalty to the Rossoneri. Ijeh stepped up and converted from the spot. Just 240 seconds later, Bakker’s side completed the comeback with 19-year-old Stokic scoring her first Serie A goal.
A counterattack led by Ijeh, who played the young forward on the left. She entered the box, cut inside, and shot with her right foot to beat Durand. Sassuolo tried with all their might to salvage a match that had gone awry and had a chance to equalize in the final seconds.
Missipo pounced on a loose ball in the box and managed to turn it into the net. A great reflex save by Giuliani denied her the goal, securing Milan’s fourth consecutive positive result. A defeat for Sassuolo, looking tired after their Coppa Italia heroics against Inter.
Napoli halts Juventus: Cantore answered by Andrup
Juventus – Napoli 1 – 1
52′ Cantore (J), 74′ Andrup (N)
Napoli stops Juventus’ Scudetto charge and secures a crucial point in the relegation battle, narrowing the gap to -1 from Sampdoria.
The match was open, with the compact Napoli side conceding very little to the Old Lady, who had two clear chances with Bennison, hitting the post, and Bonansea, heading wide from close range on an excellent cross by Girelli.
Early in the second half, Juventus took the lead with Cantore’s ninth goal of the season. Bonansea sprinted into space and crossed low to the far post, where the Bianconeri number 9 simply tapped it into the net. Napoli, despite conceding, remained solid and found an equalizer after twenty minutes. Kullashi cut inside at the edge of the box and played Andrup through, who calmly beat Peyraud-Magnin with her right foot from a tight angle.
Juventus pressed for a winner but couldn’t find it. More warning signs for Mr. Canzi’s side after the defeat, inconsequential for the progression, against Lazio in the Coppa Italia. Their lead over the chasing pack remains, but they must be wary of complacency, especially with the unexpected departure of captain Caruso, heading to Bayern Munich.
Lazio soars: fourth win in the last five matches
Como – Lazio 1 – 2
7′ Le Bihan (L), 22′ Simonetti (L), 90+3′ Kramzar (C)
Lazio secured their fourth win in the last five matches by defeating Como away in 20 minutes. Right from the start, the Biancocelesti took the lead with Le Bihan’s goal. A cross from the left by Zanoli to the head of number 11, who was unmarked in the box and beat Aprile.
In the 22nd minute, Lazio doubled their lead with Simonetti’s first goal of the season. Oliviero broke free on the right and delivered a low cross for Piemonte. The Larian goalkeeper intercepted the cross but the deflection fell to Simonetti, who made no mistake with an open goal, putting a strong hold on the match, considering Como’s lack of attacking threat.
In the second half, the game was played at a slower pace, with Lazio flirting several times with a third goal without capitalizing on the chances against Como’s defense. One minute from full time, Lazio made things difficult for themselves. A backpass to Cetinja was short and put the goalkeeper in trouble, who awkwardly handled the ball outside her area. A straight red card and a free-kick from the edge of the box for Como.
Kramzar stepped up to take the free-kick and narrowed the gap with a great low shot. The home team’s late push didn’t cause too much concern. Lazio secured more vital points, closing in on Como, who suffered their third straight defeat and were forced to leave the last spot for the Scudetto zone to Milan. Everything will be decided in the next matchday, the last of the first phase of the championship, before the Scudetto and relegation zones.

WomenThe quarter-finals are underway – Soccer style![]()
The twenty-first edition of “Macché te lo guardi?” (“Why don’t you watch it?”), the weekly column by Calciostyle dedicated to the 2024/2025 Serie A women’s championship. The women’s football movement in Italy in recent years is gaining more and more space, attracting the interest of millions of fans who live sports in our beloved Boot. Despite there still being a vast majority of people who “snub” this category, in recent seasons there have been several events and facts that have elevated women’s football to a very high level. We cannot fail to start from the transition to professionalism (July 1, 2022) reaching milestones that until a few years ago were unthinkable, such as reaching the quota of 40 thousand spectators for a single match. Compared to other European countries (especially Spain and England), the difference in terms of audience and interest surrounding women’s football is, to quote a famous Roman expression, “still very different,” or very wide. Also, taking advantage of the irreverence of the column title “Macché, te lo guardi?” (“Why don’t you watch it?”), we want to shed further light on a reality that is increasingly taking hold in our beloved country: women’s football. Because in the end, us Italians are only interested in watching and being able to comment on the football being played, regardless of who is playing. Women’s Serie A, the third round of Scudetto and Relegation PouleThe third round of the Poule Scudetto and Poule Salvezza of the Women’s Serie A. In the relegation race, Sampdoria and Napoli do not go beyond a dull 0-0 that does not change the standings, leaving these two teams as the only ones really fighting to stay in the top flight. In the other match, Como beats Lazio 2-0, grabbing the top spot in the Poule Salvezza at the expense of the Biancocelesti. In the Poule Scudetto, Fiorentina surprisingly beats Juventus with a double magic by Boquete. Despite the heavy defeat, Juventus officially qualifies, with 7 rounds in advance, for the next edition of the Women’s Champions League. Closing this round of the championship is the explosive Milan derby with Inter hurting themselves twice before being equalized by Ijeh 10 minutes from the end. Relegation PouleBoredom reigns: the relegation challenge goes beyond a drawSampdoria – Napoli 0 – 0 These are the two teams that are really fighting to stay in the Women’s Serie A. Sampdoria and Napoli, since the start of the season, are the two bottom teams in the standings and will have to fight tooth and nail to secure a pass to avoid dropping to the second division. They will have to because in the match between the two teams, played on Saturday the 15th, emotions are close to zero. At La Sciorba, boredom reigns, with the two teams never managing to threaten the opposing defenses. A goalless draw that benefits Napoli more, who remain 2 points ahead of Sampdoria with five games to go. The upcoming matches with the other teams in the Poule Salvezza will also be decisive, waiting for the return match in Naples. Como overtakes Lazio: the Biancocelesti’s positive streak interruptedLazio – Como 0 – 2 42′ Picchi (C), 75′ Del Estal (C) After six consecutive positive results, Lazio under Grassadonia, propelled to the top of the Poule Salvezza, is stopped by Como, a team that surpasses the Biancocelesti in the standings, taking the lead. Two goals per half are enough for the team from Como to tame the Roman side. In the first real opportunity, Como takes the lead, thanks to the indecision of Cetinja. In the 42nd minute, a cross from Guagni into the box from the trequartista position, the ball reaches the goal with the Lazio goalkeeper trying to lift it over the crossbar, without success. The ball remains on the goal line with Picchi taking advantage with a simple tap-in. Lazio feels the blow and, as in the first half, despite more ball possession, struggles to be dangerous in attacking phase. Fifteen minutes before the end, Como doubles the lead with Del Estal. A very long clearance by Ghilardi turns into an assist, with the Como forward escaping Eriksen and beating Cetinja. Second consecutive victory for Como, climbing to 28 points in the standings, overtaking Lazio in the Poule Salvezza lead. Lazio’s positive streak of six consecutive results is interrupted. Resting: Sassuolo Poule ScudettoA double Boquete sinks JuventusJuventus – Fiorentina 0 – 2 7′, 76′ Boquete (F) Juventus falls at home to a lively Fiorentina and a spectacular Vero Boquete, author of a fantastic brace. Fiorentina opens the scoring in the 7th minute of the match: Janogy moves down the right flank in the box and closes the triangle with the Spanish veteran who shifts the ball to her left foot from inside the small area, delivering a powerful shot under the crossbar, beating an blameless Peyraud-Magnin. The Old Lady is not at her best and struggles to create and build up, ending the first half behind. In the second half, the Bianconere seem to return with a different attitude and after just a few minutes come close to equalizing with Cantore. The ball slips in the penalty area with the number 9 making a direct shot. Fiskerstrand performs a miracle by closing the goal, maintaining Fiorentina’s lead. With fifteen minutes to go, Boquete repeats with another magical strike. A very deflected free-kick by the veteran midfielder draws an impressive curve to the far post, beating the Juventus goalkeeper. An important victory for Fiorentina, keeping Milan at bay. Second defeat in the league for Juventus, who nonetheless remain firmly at the top and very confident of winning the league. Explosive derby: Unlucky Inter with a double own goalInter – Milan 3 – 3 14′ Milinkovic (I), 38′ Merlo (own goal), 45+4′ Cambiaghi (I), 65′ Milinkovic (own goal), 68′ Wullaert (I), 80′ Ijeh (M) The third round of the Poule Scudetto ends with the Milan derby. Slightly different standings situations for the two teams: Inter competes for second place with Roma, while Milan, at the bottom of the poule, tries to catch up with Fiorentina. The Nerazzurre start strong and after a couple of chances, score from a corner kick with Milinkovic. A corner from the left by Serturini, the Rossoneri defense fails to intervene, leaving the central defender free to strike at the center of the box. Inter continues to dominate the game until the 30th minute when Bakker’s team, after half an hour of defending, starts to create some trouble for the Nerazzurri defense and at the 38th minute strikes back. Dompig plays a pivotal role with a series of feints that deceive Milikovic, creating the right space to cross for Ijeh. The striker is anticipated by Merlo, who inadvertently scores an own goal, bringing the match level. At the end of the first half, Piovani’s team regains the lead with the flying play of Cambiaghi. A similar action to the one just a few seconds earlier with Serturini serving the 96 class from a corner to head it in, with Giuliani pulling off a save, sending it for a corner again. This time, the Inter forward arrives in a flying stretch to head home Serturini’s cross, beating the passive Rossoneri defense. The second half proceeds at a slower pace compared to the first half with Inter having two good chances before being equalized again by Milan, this time with an own goal. The Nerazzurre are very unlucky. A scorching individual action by Renzotti on the right, surpassing Andres, puts a ball in from the right on the near post. Milinkovic, in an attempt to intercept Koivisto, puts the ball in her own net. However, the Rossoneri’s equalizer lasts very little. Barely 3 minutes later, Inter regains the lead with Wullaert. A defensive mix-up by the Rossoneri backline with Giuliani and Vigilucci letting the ball pass in the box from Csiszar’s left. The quickest of them all is the former Wolfsburg player, who from close range doesn’t miss. To close the goal-filled derby 10 minutes before the end is Ijeh, who brings the game back to a draw for the third and final time. On the development of a free-kick from the trequartista, the Nerazzurri defense is caught off guard with Sorelli heading the ball from close range. Runarsdottir intercepts but leaves the ball loose on the goal line for Ijeh’s winning touch. Inter fails to capitalize on Juventus’ slip-up at home against Fiorentina but still manages to distance themselves from Roma, who have a game in hand. A bitter draw also for Milan under Bakker, who loses ground on Fiorentina. Resting: Roma Women’s Serie A, Standings and Next Round
