On the eve of Feyenoord-Inter, Inter’s coach, Simone Inzaghi, held a press conference to preview the match.

Here are the statements from the Inter coach, as reported by Tuttomercatoweb, ahead of the first leg of the Champions League round of 16, where Inter will face Feyenoord away from home. Inzaghi will have to deal with a serious injury crisis, especially on the wings, where the only available player is Dumfries.

What worries you the most ahead of tomorrow’s match?

“We know we have some difficulties in a specific part of the field. Besides Dimarco, I would say Zalewski, Carlos Augusto, and Darmian: we no longer have players in that position, so one of Bastoni or Acerbi will probably play there. However, the principles of play remain the same, we are here to play a round of 16 match and we will do our best.”

Feyenoord won’t play on Saturday, while Inter will. How much of an impact will that have?

“They could have postponed the match and I think they did well, a Champions League round of 16 is important and it’s right that Feyenoord did so.”

How is Sommer doing?

“He had this finger problem, he has been working and yesterday and today he had two excellent training sessions. We are very pleased, but for tomorrow’s match, I will rely on Martinez.”

What kind of match will it be?

“It’s a physical team with great qualities. We know that playing at home is not easy, I played there in 2000 with Lazio: we were playing the quarter-finals in the second group stage. I haven’t been there as a coach yet, but I know it’s a heated environment. It’s a quality team that changed coach, they did well in the league even though it ended 0-0. And in the Champions League, they had already achieved great things, Bayern lost even though they knew they had to go through playoffs, Milan got knocked out. We know there will be the return leg, but we have to focus on tomorrow, dealing with some absences as all teams have.”

It’s your fifth consecutive round of 16, is it different for you being considered among the favorites to win the tournament?

“First of all, I am very pleased, it’s very important for the club and the fans, for all of us who work hard. Tomorrow is very important to us, we are facing a team that has made everyone suffer at home, but we will have our chances to advance to the next round.”

They are an experienced team in Europe, what does this experience suggest to you?

“We know it’s a two-legged tie, but the players know that the first leg is crucial for progressing to the next round. We will have to play a great game, I am still thinking about the best solutions to ensure the team plays well. We have some little problems to solve, but I have seen great willingness from all the players.”

What do you take away from the Napoli match?

“I don’t feel like talking much about the league today, there is a super important match tomorrow. Napoli-Inter was like Inter-Napoli in the first leg, similar results and matches. We were in an emergency situation, two important players like Dimarco and Calhanoglu asked to be substituted. We gave it all, then the equalizer came and it was probably deserved, but on that specific play, we could have done more. I read that someone blamed specific individuals, but the blame lies elsewhere and we could have defended better. It was difficult to communicate at Maradona, it’s a heated stadium that supported their team a lot: it was a nice match in an emergency situation, I wanted us to be at full strength, but that’s football today.”

Are Calhanoglu and Thuram among the doubts?

“Thuram trained regularly, Calhanoglu trained with the team this morning. There is a doubt in midfield, it’s the position where I have the most options because I have everyone available, while in the other areas we will decide tomorrow morning.”

Playing on three fronts brings pride and takes energy. Are you more proud or more worried?

“It’s a great satisfaction, we don’t like watching others play: I have done the same here for three years, I did the same at Lazio. We don’t think, we play, knowing that we are in a big emergency: it has never happened to me since I started coaching, because I have five wingers and all four who can play on the left got injured. We know the work we have done to get here, but this is football and this is the schedule we have to face. We move forward with great confidence.”

Roma-Viktoria Plzen is proof that no game is easy.

Tonight, at the Olimpico Stadium, the third day of the Europa League was played out in the Roma-Viktoria Plzen match: here’s how it went.

Not even a minute in, Artem Dobvyk almost scores a goal against the visiting team, but the shot is too central.

The game starts with a few too many mistakes from Hermoso and Wesley, and a proactive attitude from Viktoria Plzen, who repeatedly try to score in the first few minutes, forcing Mile Svilar into a miraculous save.

The visitors press high, while Roma tries to regroup mainly relying on Soulé, whose shot goes central. Shortly after, with determination and speed, Viktoria Plzen takes the lead thanks to a goal from Adu, who also bypasses Svilar. A negative trend for Roma as, just 3 minutes after the first goal, they concede again, this time from Souaré.

25 minutes into the game, Roma is losing at home 2-0. Speed is needed, so Gasperini sends Rensch to warm up on the sidelines, while El Shaarawy prepares to enter the game. Meanwhile, Koné raises the technical level of the game with feints and ball possession, making us hope that he won’t leave for Juventus in January in a swap with Koopmeiners.

At the 30th minute, Ziolkowski is substituted by Faraone. A minute later, Wesley attempts a through ball but the opposing goal remains unbreached. The objective for the Magica must be to score at least one goal before the end of the first half. By the 40th minute, the situation is still complex: meanwhile, Koné is down and receiving treatment, and Dybala tries to change the game with a very wide shot that is easily blocked. Despite the coach’s attempt, Ferguson fails to make an impact in this game, replicating the clumsy movements of Dovbyk seen at the end of the first half.

For Plzen, Spacil and Adu exit, while Bello and Zeljkovic come in. In the 86th minute, Bailey also tries his luck with a long shot that misses.

In the last minute of a 5-minute injury time, Roma suffers the blow of a last-minute goal – and a clear offside – from Niccolò Pisilli, one of the last Roma players to come on.

The verdict of this game is that Roma still has a long road ahead of them, requiring strict discipline to find the precision and composure in front of goal that they often lack, both in the league and in Europe. Dybala proves to be the team’s savior, despite his structural weaknesses, and also Svilar, who is not to blame for the goals conceded.

Now, the Giallorossi face several days of hard work ahead.
