From single round to new competition… – Football style

Twenty-fourth appointment with “Macché te lo guardi?”, the weekly column of Calciostyle dedicated to the 2024/2025 Serie A women’s championship.
The women’s football movement in Italy in recent years is gaining more and more space, attracting the interest of millions of fans who live the sport in our beloved country. Despite there still being a vast majority of people who “snub” this category, in recent seasons there have been several events and facts that have elevated women’s football to a very high level.
We cannot ignore the move to professionalism (July 1, 2022) and reaching milestones that until a few years ago were unthinkable, such as reaching an audience of 40,000 spectators for a single match.
Compared to other European countries (Spain and England above all), the difference in terms of audience and interest in women’s football is, to quote a famous Roman expression, “still a dear friend,” meaning very significant.
By also exploiting the irreverence of the column’s title “Macché, te lo guardi?”, we want to shed further light on a reality that is increasingly gaining ground in our beloved country: women’s football. Because in the end, us Italians are only interested in watching and being able to comment on the game, regardless of who is playing.
Women’s Serie A, the sixth round of Scudetto and Relegation Pool
We are getting closer to the end of the Women’s Serie A. This past weekend saw the sixth round of the top-flight championship, divided into Scudetto Pool and Relegation Pool. Regarding the relegation zone, Sampdoria and Napoli once again fall to Lazio and Sassuolo, postponing the direct clash between the two teams for the definitive step towards remaining in Serie A. The Biancocelesti return to the top of the Relegation Pool, awaiting Como, who will face Sassuolo next week.
As for the Scudetto Pool, Juventus takes a step towards the Tricolore, defeating Roma away in a general rehearsal for the Coppa Italia final, scheduled for May 17 in Como. A heavy defeat for the Giallorosse, who remain in third place in the standings, just one point behind Inter, who will be the next opponents of the Giallorosse.
Milan overwhelms Fiorentina with a rampant Ijeh. The hat-trick by Janogy for Viola is useless in terms of the result.
Relegation Pool
Lazio show all their strength in 12 minutes
Sampdoria – Lazio 0 – 3
52′ Le Bihan (L), 61′ Visentin (L), 64′ Simonetti (L)
It’s all too easy for Lazio at Sciorba in the match valid for the sixth round of the Relegation Pool against Sampdoria, who are in a fierce battle to stay in Serie A. In the first half, the Biancocelesti scare the Blucerchiati defense in the 24th minute with a brilliant free-kick by Simonetti. A set-piece at the edge of the box where the number 20 midfielder hits an incredible crossbar, with the ball bouncing out.
After a blocked first half, Grassadonia’s team dominates in the second half, closing the Sampdoria case in just 12 minutes of play. A direct free-kick just inside the box: Simonetti touches the ball for Le Bihan‘s powerful right-footed shot that finds the top corner of the Blucerchiati goal perfectly. Nine minutes later, Lazio doubles the lead thanks to the seventh goal of the season by Visentin. Le Bihan serves Goldoni on the wing, who immediately plays it inside for the perfect run of the number 99 Biancoceleste, who doesn’t miss from close range.
Sampdoria completely collapses, and three minutes later, they concede the penalty that seals the game. Panzeri fouls a rampant Visentin in the box, leaving no doubts for the referee. From the spot, Simonetti steps up and beats Larsen with a powerful right-footed shot.
An important victory for Lazio, who temporarily equals Como at the top of the Relegation Pool standings. Sampdoria will play for their survival in a direct clash with Napoli.
Napoli believes but it’s not enough: Dhont and the post condemn the Neapolitans
Napoli – Sassuolo 0 – 1
76′ Dhont (S)
An aggressive and attentive Napoli falls at home to Sassuolo by a narrow 0-1 margin. The Neapolitans try several times in both the first and second half but are thwarted by the wall put up by the Neroverde goalkeeper Durand. The decisive goal comes at the 76th minute: Philtejens breaks away on the left, delivering a precise cross to Dhont‘s head. The striker rises above everyone to head home at the near post, beating Bacic.
Napoli have a chance in stoppage time with Moretti. A quick counterattack with Sciabica bypassing the first press and playing a through ball for number 28, who enters the box and unleashes a powerful right-footed shot that hits the outside post, shattering all hopes of Napoli, just centimeters away from taking home an important point in the relegation battle.
Sassuolo, despite having nothing more to ask from the championship, secures their second consecutive victory, the fourth in the last 6 matches.

Scudetto Pool
Milan unleashed: Ijeh strikes against the Viola
22′, 28′ Ijeh (M), 44′, 63′, 82′ Janogy (F), 48′ Arrigoni (M), 53′ Renzotti (M), 61′ Koivisto (M)
A rampant Milan overwhelms a Fiorentina team now far from the Europa zone. The Rossonere close the gap in the standings with De La Fuente‘s side, which appeared totally at the mercy of the Rossonere’s raids.
Ijeh takes center stage, scoring a beautiful brace in 6 minutes to put Milan ahead. In the 22nd minute, Mascarello creates space in the penalty area with an illuminating pass for the 2001-born striker, who remains composed in front of Fiskerstrand and slots it home. The Swedish forward’s personal brace, her tenth goal of the season, is a treat for the eyes. A deadly one-two with Dompig in the box, where Ijeh beats Faerge with a spectacular move, followed by a powerful shot that the Viola goalkeeper can’t stop.
Milan dominates, but a minute before the end of the first half, they concede a goal that halves the lead. A defensive error by the Rossoneri with Fedele misplacing the clearance and gifting the ball to Fiorentina. Bonfantini immediately finds Janogy onside, who scores confidently from close range.
However, the 2-1 lead lasts very briefly. Bakker’s players return hungry in the second half and close the game in 5 minutes. In the 48th minute, Arrigoni attempts a seemingly harmless cross from the left, deflected by Pedersen‘s head. The trajectory rises and incredibly beats Fiskerstrand. Arrigoni continues to be Fiorentina‘s favorite victim with 6 goals in as many matches.
In the 53rd minute, there’s also room for the first professional goal for Renzotti. The young forward dribbles past the Viola goalkeeper and slightly lifts the shot, overcoming the last-ditch attempt of the defense to clear and finding her first personal joy.
The final blow arrives shortly after. In the 61st minute, Koivisto makes the most of Arrigoni‘s layoff in the box and scores from close range. Fiorentina tries to get back into the game with Janogy, the only one in form for the Viola. Despite her subsequent two goals, the match ends with a 5-3 victory.
Godò/Cantore decide it: Bianconere on the brink of the Tricolore
Roma – Juventus 1 – 2
9′ Godo (J), 31′ Cantore (J), 83′ Giacinti (R)
Juventus inches closer to the conquest of the Tricolore, missing for the past two years. The Bianconere, playing away at Roma, have a ravenous start, knowing that the final goal is very close. Barely enough time to settle in the stands at Tre Fontane before the Vecchia Signora finds themselves one-on-one with Ceasar, the Roma goalkeeper.
Cantore charges down the left, outrunning Linari and delivering a cross to Brighton in the middle, who inexplicably puts it wide from close range. It’s just a warning to the Roma defense, who must capitulate already in the 9th minute. Girelli sets up Godo at the edge of the box, who shifts to the center-right and, seeing the lack of marking from the Giallorosse, takes his time to aim and curls a precise shot into the far corner, beating Ceasar and giving the Bianconere the lead.
Roma is absent on the field and, due to several mistakes in the build-up, gives away numerous counterattacks to coach Canzi‘s girls. It’s one of these “horrors” that leads to the second blow from the Juve courtesy of Cantore. The Bianconeri forward steals the ball from Linari and, one-on-one with the Roma goalkeeper, doesn’t miss, putting a virtual lock on the match in the first half.
In the second half, the story remains the same with a Roma side too timid to challenge the Bianconeri defense and a Juve side in control.
Substitutions made by coach Spugna give Roma the necessary push, and the Giallorosse begin to create chances against Peyraud-Magnin. In the 83rd minute, Roma finds an unexpected goal through Giacinti. The Italian striker makes the most of a through ball from Troelsgaard and doesn’t miss in front of the Bianconeri goalkeeper, reopening the game.
The match ends with a 2-1 victory for the Bianconere. In fact, the late surge from Spugna’s players fails to make an impact, with the best chance coming seconds from the end with the duo Glionna–Corelli, both substitutes. A defensive lapse from Juve sees Glionna in an optimal position, but she chooses to backheel to her teammate, who shoots wide.
A crucial victory for Juventus, who can finally celebrate a Tricolore that has never been in doubt from the next round. The Giallorosse will face Inter in the other match of the Scudetto Pool for the second-place spot.

The performances of the Italian National Team (reaching the semifinals) at the European Championship in Switzerland this summer certainly brought a lot of attention to the entire movement, but there is still a long way to go to give the right spotlight to the Italian championship. Disappointing home debut for Rossettini’s Roma. Defeated 0-4 against Barcelona’s aliens in a sold-out Tre Fontane. Second matchday and second defeat for Roma under Rossettini in the Women’s Champions League. After facing Real Madrid a week ago, Roma welcomed the aliens from Barcelona. “Aliens” because they are not only one of the strongest, if not the strongest, teams in the world, but also had a superb start to the season. Since the beginning of the 2025/2026 season, Barcelona has played 8 matches, winning all of them, scoring 44 goals and conceding only two. A true powerhouse, which also crushed the Giallorossa team in a completely sold-out Tre Fontane. ![]() ROMA FEMMINILE FORMATION (PHOTO BY SALVATORE FORNELLI)
Despite a significant technical gap, Rossettini‘s girls managed to keep up with the Spanish team in the first half, ending the first half only one goal down, scored less than two minutes into the match. Roma played a defensive game, trying to limit Barcelona‘s constant passing game and exploiting their high defensive line for counterattacks. The opportunity for an equalizer came to Viens, who faced the opposing goalkeeper one-on-one but was unable to score. In the second half, due to collective fatigue, Barcelona scored three more goals past Baldi‘s goal. The Spanish team also missed a penalty with former Ballon d’Or winner Putellas, who shot high. Despite the differences on the field, there are positive aspects for coach Rossettini to take into account for the upcoming matches in the league and Champions League, where the opponents will be, at least on paper, more manageable and within reach. Roma – Barcelona 0 – 4 (2′ Brugts, 58′ Nazareth, 71′ pen. Putellas, 90′ Hansen)
