Manchester United, is it worth winning the Europa League?

Tomorrow the Europa League final between Tottenham and Manchester United will take place in Bilbao. But who has triumphed in the last 10 editions of the tournament?
Tomorrow we will find out who between Tottenham and Man Utd will bring home the EL, and redeem a disastrous season. It is worth noting that the winner of the tournament will also be able to participate in the next Champions League.
So, while waiting for tomorrow’s final, let’s take a look at how the last 10 finals of the trophy went.
Europa League finals: from the surprise of Dnipro to Sarri’s triumph
Let’s go back to 2015 where Sevilla, the reigning champion, faces the fairy tale Dnipro. It will be the Underdogs who unlock the final with Nikola Kalinic (who will move to Fiorentina the following summer).
Emery’s team responds by turning everything around with goals from Krychowiak and Bacca. The Ukrainians, however, do not give up and find the equalizer at the end of the first half with Rotan.
In the end, Sevilla triumphs, winning 2-3 thanks to another goal from Bacca in the second half. Los Rojiblancos repeat the following year, this time beating Liverpool with Klopp, who opens the scoring with Daniel Sturridge. However, the Emery team triumphs by winning 1-3 thanks to goals from Gameiro and Coke (brace).
In 2017, it is Mourinho’s Man Utd who win the trophy after winning the Community Shield and Carabao Cup. Surrendering to the Red Devils is Ajax who are beaten 0-2 thanks to goals from Pogba and Mkhitaryan.
In 2018, Atletico Madrid wins the EL, with a 0-3 against Marseille. The scorers are the usual Griezmann (brace) and Gabi. It is worth noting that in the first half, Les Phoceens have to do without captain Payet who leaves the field in tears due to injury.
In 2019, the final is all English between Chelsea and Arsenal. After a blocked first half, Sarri’s Blues unleash with goals from Giroud, Pedro, and Hazard (brace). Arsenal’s goal by Iwobi is futile for the Gunners.
From Inter’s disappointment to Eintracht’s triumph
The Europa League final of 2020 is quite special: it is played in August behind closed doors due to the Covid pandemic. Sevilla and Inter face each other, with Conte’s men starting well and taking the lead immediately with a penalty from Lukaku. However, a brace from Luuk De Jong turns everything around.
Inter responds immediately by scoring the 2-2 with Godin, but an unfortunate own goal by Lukaku in the second half hands the EL once again to the Rojiblancos.
In 2021, the final is between Villarreal and Man Utd, with the Yellow Submarine aiming to win their first European trophy. It is Emery’s team that unlocks the match in the first half with Gerard Moreno, but in the second half, the equalizer comes from Cavani for the Red Devils.
The match goes to penalties (which had not happened in a Europa League final since 2014): for Villarreal, no one misses, not even goalkeeper Rulli. The same goes for Man Utd, almost: De Gea has his penalty saved by Rulli, and the Yellow Submarine wins their first European trophy.
In 2022, Eintracht Frankfurt and Rangers play the final: two big surprises of the tournament. The Scots open the scoring with a goal from Aribo, but the Eagles (Die Adler) equalize with Borrè. Like the previous year, the final goes to penalties: fatal for Rangers is the error of Aaron Ramsey, while Borrè scores the penalty that brings the trophy to Frankfurt.
Roma’s controversy, Atalanta’s fairy tale
In 2023, Sevilla and Roma play the final. The Giallorossi open the scoring in the first half thanks to Dybala, but an own goal by Mancini levels everything. The final is once again decided on penalties, and once again the Rojiblancos triumph: decisive are the errors of Mancini and Ibañez.
But how can we forget last year’s final? In this case, we are talking about the magical night of Atalanta, who, led by Ademola Lookman, beat Bayer Leverkusen 3-0 (undefeated in the season until that match). An unforgettable night for the entire city of Bergamo.
