Serie A, minutes in the lead: Juventus reigns, Inter-Milan duel

Every Serie A match is defined by moments, and consequently, the result can favor one club over another, or even both.

Therefore, analyzing the minutes spent in advantage, parity, and disadvantage provides an interesting insight into the performance of a particular team. Throughout the history of Serie A , it is possible to determine the consistency and strength of the main teams in the Italian championship.

Serie A: the queen of advantage

At the top of the list for minutes spent with the result in their favor, we find Juventus. The Bianconeri have spent 100,388 minutes in advantage. The equivalent of almost two and a half months without interruption. The number of editions (92) in which they have participated also plays a role. So much so that Atalanta (64) is only eleventh, separated from the top 10 by about three thousand minutes. Completing the podium are the two Milan teams.

Inter, with its 93 appearances in the top Italian league, has collected 95,766 minutes in advantage. While Milan, with its 91 editions, has been in the lead for 89,796 minutes. Immediately outside the podium are: Roma (81,678), Fiorentina (71,573), and Lazio with 68,816.

Draw, my draw

Turning to the time spent in parity, there is a certain balance. The leaders in this category, in a close battle, are Roma (141,678′ in parity) and Milan (140,496′).

Inter closes the podium with 140,496. Among the other top teams, it is worth noting the 4th place of the Vecchia Signora with 139,882. Among others currently in prominent positions, the team less accustomed to draws is once again Atalanta (105,489), but also Napoli (125,333′) often avoids the X mark.

The disadvantage of being behind in Serie A

On the other hand, the team that has suffered the most over time is Fiorentina. La Viola is the team that has spent the most minutes in disadvantage (58,162). Just behind them, very close, is Lazio with 58,024.

On the opposite end, with the necessary considerations, we find Pistoiese, the only team under 1,000 minutes. This is because the Tuscan team only competed in Serie A in the 1980/81 season, in which they were relegated with only 6 wins and 4 draws. Considering only the historic clubs of the league, Juventus once again leads the ranking. The Bianconeri have been behind for 40,034 minutes, just under a full month, followed by Udinese (43,129) and Inter (47,350).

And in European competitions?

If we consider all European cups in their current format, Juventus performs the best among Italian teams. They are, in fact, the top Italian team in this statistic. Unreachable, of course, are the Spanish teams. For example, Barcelona could catch up to Real Madrid in a match against Inter. Inter has been in the lead for 5,469 minutes so far, almost half the time of Barcelona (11,113′).

I rossoneri sprecano una grande occasione per consolidare il primato: da 1-0 a 1-2, servono i minuti finali per evitare una sconfitta clamorosa. Il rischio di perdere la vetta per il Milan è ora concreto.

Doveva essere una serata di tranquillità per i rossoneri, l’occasione per rafforzare il 1° posto in classifica e affrontare con serenità il turno infrasettimanale. Invece, contro un Pisa coraggioso, i rossoneri si complicano la vita e devono ringraziare Athekame, autore del 2-2 in pieno recupero, per aver evitato una figuraccia.

Milan-Pisa 2-2: l’analisi della partita

Il match si era messo subito in discesa grazie al gol di Leao dopo appena sette minuti. Ma la squadra di Allegri, invece di chiudere la partita, si è adagiata, peccando di presunzione e mancando di cattiveria sotto porta. Nel primo tempo il Milan controlla ma non affonda, e il Pisa resta in partita.

Nella ripresa Gilardino pesca il jolly: l’ingresso di Cuadrado cambia tutto. Il colombiano conquista e realizza il rigore dell’1-1, l’ottavo centro in carriera contro i rossoneri, poi ispira il contropiede che porta Nzola al clamoroso 2-1. Il Milan, confuso e poco lucido, prova a reagire, con Leao che colpisce una traversa, Nkunku spreca il possibile sorpasso.

Solo nei minuti di recupero arriva il pareggio, firmato Athekame, che evita una sconfitta pesante ma non cancella l’amarezza. I rossoneri pagano forse la mancanza di rispetto per l’avversario, proprio come aveva ammonito Allegri prima del fischio d’inizio.

Un bagno d’umiltà necessario, perché martedì a Bergamo il Milan rischia di non presentarsi più da capolista.

The main problem for Cuesta remains the lack of a clear playing identity. The yellow-blue team often appears lacking bite and struggles especially in the offensive phase, where it seems to overly depend on the individual plays of its best players.

The serious injuries of Ondrejka and Frigan have certainly complicated the plans, but the feeling is that more decisive action could have been taken in the summer transfer market, especially after the significant departures of Leoni, Bonny, and Sohm. Now Cuesta finds himself with a squad lacking quality and alternatives, while the management, despite reiterating confidence in their coach, cannot ignore the warning signs.

Another misstep could indeed raise doubts about the future of the Spanish coach, with fans finally asking for a solid performance and some signs from an attack so far too dependent on Pellegrino.

No one is in better form than Inter. The Nerazzurri, coming off 7 consecutive victories in Serie A and Champions League, want to continue their great form in the big match against Napoli. The Maradona challenge, between the top two teams of last season, could determine new power dynamics at the top. Currently, both teams are tied on 15 points in the standings.

“For me, it doesn’t change anything, I have 4 compatible and generous strikers, if I mix them, the team’s performance remains the same. For me, there are no pairs, they have shown they can play together.”

Is it becoming harder to score in Serie A?

“I don’t see a problem, it means teams are well-prepared and so are the coaches. Abroad, there’s less concern about the opponent and more focus on the development of your own team. But it doesn’t mean that Italian football is declining or lagging behind, it’s a different way of interpreting it.”

Napoli is the team that beat them a year ago: is there a desire for revenge?

“I don’t think they have any chips on their shoulders. After Conte, there was Inzaghi and we won the second star and played two Champions League finals. I don’t think facing Conte is an extra motivation, we are Inter.”

“Diouf and Luis Henrique have played less so far but they have room for growth, I don’t consider them ready yet, but it doesn’t mean I haven’t given them the opportunity. Perhaps with many close games, I had less time to listen to them and explain things, but they have quality, I see it every day and there will come a time when they unlock and we’ll see them on the field more often.”
