The twenty-eighth and final installment of “Macché te lo guardi?” (Why don’t you watch it?), the weekly column by Calciostyle dedicated to the 2024/2025 Serie A women’s championship.
Women’s football in Italy in recent years has been gaining more and more attention, attracting the interest of millions of fans who live sports in our beloved country. Despite there still being a vast majority of people who “snub” this category, in recent seasons there have been several events and developments that have elevated women’s football to a very high level.
We cannot ignore the move to professionalism (July 1, 2022) and reaching milestones that were unthinkable just a few years ago, such as reaching an audience of 40,000 spectators for a single match.
Compared to other European countries (especially Spain and England), the difference in terms of audience and interest in women’s football is still considerable.
By also leveraging the irreverence of the column title “Macché, te lo guardi?” (Why don’t you watch it?), we want to shed further light on a reality that is gaining ground in our beloved country: women’s football. In the end, what matters to us Italians is just watching and being able to comment on the game, regardless of who is playing.
Women’s Serie A, the tenth round of Scudetto and Relegation Pools
The tenth and final round of the Scudetto and Relegation Pools has ended. There was only one outcome left to decipher: who would join Juventus and Inter in the Women’s Champions League next season. In the battle for Europe between Fiorentina and Roma, the Giallorosse secured the pass to the European cup with a penalty from captain Giugliano early in the second half.
In the other Scudetto Pool match, Juventus fell at home to Inter, but the celebrations at the Allianz Stadium were all black and white for the sixth Scudetto conquered. Touching moments during the pasillo de honor for Sara Gama, the historic Juventus captain who will hang up her boots at the end of the season. Along with her, Guagni also bids farewell to playing football in the 3-1 victory of Como over Napoli. Finally, Sampdoria bids farewell to the top flight with another defeat against Sassuolo.
Next up is the Coppa Italia final between Juventus and Roma on Saturday, May 17 in Como.
The final verdicts of the 2024/2025 season: Juventus, Inter, and Roma in the Women’s Champions League, Sampdoria relegated to Serie B, and promoted from the second tier are Ternana, Parma, and Genoa.
Relegation Pool
Como closes the season with three points
Como – Napoli 3 – 1
11′ Karlernas (C), 13′ Lundorf (N), 35′ Kerr (C), 73′ Nischler (C)
The Como season ends with a home victory over Napoli. The lariane take the lead with Karlernas. A cross from the left by Marcussen, a header by Nischler to redirect the ball to the far post where Karlernas scores her fifth goal of the season with an open goal.
Napoli’s response comes less than two minutes later, leveling the game. A sprint on the left by Banusic, who delivers a long cross to the far post where Lundorf cleverly anticipates the opponent and taps the ball past Schroffenegger back in goal after a long injury.
Como regains the lead just over half an hour into the game thanks to an error in Napoli’s setup. Santoro completely misses the pass, and Nischler pounces on it. In a 2 vs. 1 situation, she serves Kerr on the right, who scores from the spot between the penalty spot and beats Beretta.
In the second half, Napoli tries to get back into the game, but despite some promising runs, they never manage to be dangerous in the offensive zone. The lariane take advantage and score a third, practically sealing the victory. Just under a quarter of an hour before the end, after providing two assists, Nischler also adds her name to the scoresheet.
A lightning counterattack by Como with the 2000-born forward lifting the ball just enough to beat the Napoli goalkeeper after having closed the angle on Del Estal.
During the second half, there is also room for some emotion. In fact, in addition to Sara Gama, Como’s Alia Guagni also steps out onto the field for the last time in her career. A mandatory pasillo de honor for one of the absolute protagonists of recent women’s football history in Italy and the Italian national team (87 appearances). An important tribute to the 36-year-old who can boast a Serie A title with Fiorentina in 2018 and a Spanish Super Cup with Atletico Madrid.
Despite a good performance, Napoli ends their season with a defeat. The second-place finish in the Relegation Pool is confirmed for Como.
Clelland’s brace earns the last three points of the season
Sassuolo – Sampdoria 4 – 2
6′ Cimò (Samp), 34′ Monterubbiano (Sas), 66′ Baldi (Samp), 79′ Girotto (Sas), 88′, 90+3′ Clelland (Sas)
The season in Serie A for Sampdoria concludes with another defeat, already mathematically relegated. A very entertaining match between the doriane and Sassuolo, with both teams leaving it all on the field.
The match was lively from the start, with both teams coming close to scoring early on: first Sampdoria with Llopis, then Sassuolo with Monterubbiano. However, it was the away team that broke the deadlock, with the 2006-born Cimò. A venomous pass from Pittaccio to the young player who outpaced the Doriana defense and scored past Di Nallo.
The game’s dynamics changed at the 20-minute mark with Sampdoria reduced to 10 players. A straight red card for Barbieri for a reckless challenge on Monterubbiano made the game an uphill battle for the blucerchiate despite being ahead. Capitalizing on the numerical advantage, Sassuolo equalized from a corner in the 34th minute.
A left-footed strike by Monterubbiano beats Tampieri after a reflex save, leaving the ball in front of the goal line for Monterubbiano to tap in. The pace slowed down after the equalizer and just over an hour into the game, Sampdoria surprisingly took the lead again despite being a player down.
A lofted pass over the entire midfield by Heroum to Baldi, who entered the box and beat Di Nallo with a precise diagonal shot, igniting the blucerchiata bench.
Playing with a player less began to take its toll on Sampdoria, and within ten minutes, they succumbed to Sassuolo. The equalizer was a pure gem. Clelland received the ball on the flank and delivered an illuminating assist to Girotto in the middle, who pulled off an incredible move: a scorpion kick to beat Pisani, the ball hit the crossbar and went in. Tampieri was helpless in front of the number 58’s invention.
Following the magnificent assist, Clelland took center stage and with her brace, gave her audience one last festive afternoon. Girotto played a through ball to the Scottish striker, who outpaced her direct opponent and beat Tampieri with a powerful right-footed shot into the corner. With time running out, Sassuolo scored a fourth on the counter: Sampdoria were all out attacking in search of an equalizer, and Sassuolo recovered the ball and launched Clelland into space to beat Tampieri one-on-one.
Sassuolo closed their season with a victory, while Sampdoria bid goodbye to the top flight with a bitter taste.

Giugliano’s penalty sends Roma flying to the Champions League
Fiorentina – Roma 0 – 1
48′ Giugliano (R)
The final missing verdict was who could join Juventus and Inter in the Women’s Champions League next year between Roma and Fiorentina. So, at the Viola Park, a do-or-die match for the two teams.
After a fairly calm first half without any particular alarms, the incident that decided the match arrived early in the second half. Haavi was brought down in the box, and the referee pointed to the penalty spot. Captain Giugliano stepped up and scored, bypassing Fiskerstrand.
The game, after Roma took the lead, intensified with both teams hitting the woodwork six times: 3 each. However, Fiorentina, despite hitting the post and crossbar, failed to pose a real threat, letting the game slide towards its natural conclusion, aided by a very fragmented second half.
Roma, despite a lackluster performance, secured their fourth consecutive qualification in the Champions League. An objective that at the start of the season was seen as the bare minimum but became a precious achievement during this fluctuating year. The last chance to salvage a difficult season is the Coppa Italia final against Juventus, scheduled for Saturday, May 17 at the Sinigaglia in Como.
Scudetto celebration for Juve and pasillo de honor for Gama: Inter prevails with Bugeja
Juventus – Inter 0 – 1
76′ Bugeja (I)
Inter’s superb season ends on a high note, beating newly-crowned Italian champions Juventus at home. But at the beginning, all the spotlight was on Sara Gama. The iconic Juventus captain hangs up her boots. Such a profound and touching farewell could not have a more fitting public setting for the player: the Allianz Stadium.
The Juventus men’s stadium becomes the perfect closing circle for the Bianconeri number 3, who receives a pasillo de honor from teammates and opponents. The entire stadium stands to applaud one of the most important and iconic players in Italian women’s football. Gama leaves Juventus after 154 appearances and six national titles, three Coppa Italia, and three Supercoppa Italiana, all with the captain’s armband.
The match resumes after these touching moments with Inter taking control and being more dominant than a Juventus side waiting for the final whistle to start the Scudetto celebrations. The Nerazzurre have a stronger attacking presence and, 15 minutes from the end, unlock the game with substitute Bugeja. Detruyer delivers to the center of the box, where the midfielder, with a counter movement outwards, beats Harkiven and scores past the Bianconeri goalkeeper with a precise left-footed shot.
Juventus ignites in the final stages, especially thanks to Vangsgaard, who also came on and was one of the most proactive players for the Bianconeri. But the former PSG player has to deal with Runarsdottir in a couple of instances.
A painless defeat for Juventus, who will face Roma in the Coppa Italia final less than a week later, on Saturday, May 17 at the Sinigaglia in Como. Inter closes a great season on a high, culminating in the historic first access to the Women’s Champions League.

WomenFuture between Roma and Premier![]() Linari in the sights of English clubs, between career choices and Roma Women: between leadership and Premier dreams, decision coming soon. According to a tweet by sports journalist Leonardo Frenquelli, there is interest from an English club. Elena Linari, coming off a season as an undisputed leader, could consider a move to England as early as next summer. After Cantore, another departure abroad? Interest from across the Channel for Elena Linari In the last hours, strong interest from an English club for Elena Linari, defensive pillar of Roma Women and captain of the Italian National Team, has emerged. According to market sources, several teams from the Women’s Super League have initiated exploratory contacts. Among these is also a top club like the London City Lionesses. Linari is tied to the Giallorossi club by a contract that expires in 2026. Therefore, Roma would receive a very substantial fee in case of a transfer. Career: a journey of titles and international experiences Born in 1994, Linari has a solid and international career behind her. From her early steps in Firenze to a double with Brescia (2014, 2016), passing through a Serie A title with Fiorentina (2017), a Liga victory with Atletico Madrid (2019), and a brief experience in France before arriving at Roma in January 2021. With the Giallorossi jersey, she has confirmed her value: over 94 appearances, 13 goals in four years, two consecutive Serie A titles, Coppa Italia, and Supercoppa Italiana. Influence: voted best defender in Serie A (2023-24 and 2024-25). Currently, Elena has surpassed 100 appearances with Roma Women and, with over 100 caps for the National Team, leads the Italian defense with experience and personality. The last season of Roma Women Roma Women finished the 2024-25 season in third place in Serie A, won the Supercup, and participated in the Champions League until the group stage. The team was undoubtedly led by Linari, Giugliano, and Haavi: the defense is solid, the offensive phase is growing, and coach Spugna focuses on compactness and concreteness. Linari played 22 league games, also scoring in the Coppa Italia and leading the Giallorossi to a semifinal with a decisive goal against Napoli. At the end of the season, she emphasized the importance of the Champions League: “Difficult season, but we are proud.” What could change for the future of the club English interest in Linari could leave Roma with a significant gap in the backline. In view of the summer transfer market, Roma Women will have to decide whether to focus on an internal heir or seek reinforcements in the market. However, the potential departure of the captain could usher in a new phase: more space for young players like Dragoni, who has grown during the season. But also the need for defensive leadership. For Elena, the offer from the WSL represents an opportunity to compete internationally and refine her game in one of the best leagues in the world. On the other hand, Roma will have to prepare to redefine balances and hierarchies. Continuing to defend sporting ambitions: Serie A title, Coppa Italia, and Champions League qualification. Ensuring a competitive squad. Linari: a professional aware of her own value The player has always been attentive to team dynamics and focused on the future. Her potential transfer is not just an individual choice, but a potential turning point for the entire club. A transition from co-leader to facilitator, from historical reference to the “object of desire” of the international market. In the coming days, the official decision will be made. Everything you need to know – Soccer style![]()
Cantore leaves Juventus Women to fly to the United States. Only beautiful words and gratitude for her departure. The player is a pride for everyone. From Turin to Washington. And Soncin proud. It is now official. Sofia Cantore leaves Juventus Women to join the top tier of the United States. The 1999-born forward has accepted the offer from Washington Spirit. The American club, to secure her services, has paid the buyout clause in her contract. We are talking about approximately 350,000 euros. This is a record figure for Italian women’s football. It will go down in history as one of the top three most lucrative deals in Europe this season. Steps forward that will allow future years to dream of such figures. As if that weren’t enough, Cantore will become the first Italian player to compete in the NWSL (National Women’s Soccer League), the top U.S. women’s league. She will continue her career there after years of success in the black and white jersey. Even the Coach of the Women’s National Team, Andrea Soncin, commented on the transfer of his forward: Juventus: Thank you for everything, Sofia! The Bianconeri club could not let this farewell go unnoticed. They officially bid farewell to Sofia Cantore with a long statement published on their official website, entitled “THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING, SOFIA!”. Here is the full text: “Sprinting down the wing, perfect control, one-on-one, nutmeg on the opponent heading straight towards the penalty area, feint, shot to the far post. Goal. It’s difficult to find a way to encapsulate and put together all the pieces that make up the personality and talent of Sofia Cantore, but the goal scored against PSG in the first leg of the super qualifying match last September holds quite a few together, between technique, desire, quality, and speed. A player who over the years has become one of the protagonists of Juventus Women. After many successes achieved together, the paths of our team and Sofia Cantore diverge: the Bianconeri forward will permanently move to Washington Spirit, after wearing the Juventus Women jersey 128 times in her career, starting from those final 17 minutes in the 3-0 victory against Atalanta Mozzanica on September 30, 2017 – a memorable match for her, as she turned 18 that day, celebrating her adulthood with her Serie A debut. Cantore has truly grown in black and white in every aspect, winning Scudetti and trophies, climbing the ranks and carving out an increasingly important role within our team – up to the definitive consecration in the just-ended season, by far the best of her career with 18 goals in 39 matches. The last one coming in the farewell match, in the 4-0 final of the Coppa Italia, to close the circle exactly as she had opened it: with a victory. A great professional with a contagious smile and enthusiasm that we bid farewell to with great affection: thank you Sofi, good luck for the future!”. And what can we say? Crush it, Sofia.
