Tomorrow the Europa League final between Tottenham and Manchester United will take place in Bilbao. But who has triumphed in the last 10 editions of the tournament?
Tomorrow we will find out who between Tottenham and Man Utd will take home the EL trophy, and redeem a disastrous season. It is important to remember that the winner of the tournament will also be able to participate in the next Champions League.
So, while waiting for tomorrow’s final, let’s take a look at how the last 10 finals of the tournament went.
Europa League finals: from the surprise of Dnipro to Sarri’s triumph
Let’s go back to 2015 when the Sevilla, the defending champions, faced the fairy tale Dnipro. It was the underdogs who opened the scoring in the final with Nikola Kalinic (who would move to Fiorentina the following summer).
Emery’s team responded by turning the game around with goals from Krychowiak and Bacca. The Ukrainians, however, did not give up and equalized at the end of the first half with Rotan.
In the end, Sevilla triumphed, winning 2-3 thanks to another goal from Bacca in the second half. Los Rojiblancos repeated the victory a year later, this time beating Liverpool led by Klopp, who opened the scoring with Daniel Sturridge. However, Emery’s team triumphed by winning 1-3 with goals from Gameiro and Coke (brace).
In 2017, it was Mourinho’s Man Utd that won the trophy after winning the Community Shield and the Carabao Cup. The team that surrendered to the Red Devils was Ajax, who were beaten 0-2 thanks to goals from Pogba and Mkhitaryan.
In 2018, Atletico Madrid won the EL, with a 0-3 victory over Marseille. The goals were scored by the usual Griezmann (brace) and Gabi. It is worth noting that, in the first half, Les Phoceens had to do without captain Payet
In 2019, the final was an all-English affair between Chelsea and Arsenal. After a tight first half, Sarri’s Blues unleashed in the second half with goals from Giroud, Pedro, and Hazard (brace). Arsenal’s goal from Iwobi was not enough for the Gunners.
From Inter’s disappointment to Eintracht’s triumph
The 2020 Europa League final was quite unique: it was played in August behind closed doors due to the Covid pandemic. Sevilla and Inter faced each other, with Conte’s team starting well and taking the lead with a penalty from Lukaku. However, a brace from Luuk De Jong turned the game around.
Inter quickly equalized with a goal from Godin, but an unfortunate own goal from Lukaku in the second half handed the EL trophy once again to the Rojiblancos.
In 2021, the final was between Villarreal and Man Utd, with the Yellow Submarine aiming to win its first European trophy. Emery’s team opened the scoring in the first half with Gerard Moreno, but in the second half, Cavani equalized for the Red Devils.
The match went to penalties (the first time in a Europa League final since 2014): Villarreal did not miss any penalties, not even goalkeeper Rulli. The same went for Man Utd, almost: De Gea had his penalty saved by Rulli, and the Yellow Submarine won its first European trophy.
In 2022, Eintracht Frankfurt and Rangers played in the final: two big surprises of the tournament. The Scots opened the scoring with a goal from Aribo, but Die Adler equalized with Borrè. Like the previous year, the final went to penalties: the crucial miss from Aaron Ramsey cost the trophy to Rangers, while Borrè scored the penalty that brought the trophy to Frankfurt.
Roma’s controversy, Atalanta’s fairy tale
In 2023, it was Sevilla and Roma playing in the final. The Giallorossi opened the scoring in the first half thanks to Dybala, but an own goal from Mancini leveled the score. Once again, the final was decided by penalties, and Sevilla emerged victorious once again: the decisive errors came from Mancini and Ibañez.
But who can forget last year’s final? In this case, we are talking about the magical night of Atalanta, who, led by Ademola Lookman, defeated Bayer Leverkusen 3-0 (unbeaten in the season until that match). An unforgettable night for the entire city of Bergamo.

Victory
“It had been a while since we had a victory, we were eager to feel it again. There was that unexpected goal, but we reacted well and I am proud of the team’s spirit.”
Mindset
“We are more free and carefree, we have always been focused: we tried to stay united as we have to do with the new coach.”
Tiredness
“I think it’s inevitable, it has been an exhausting season but we didn’t come here for vacation, we are here to lift the Inter brand high.”
Chivu
“Certainly, the coach has been here for a very short time, we will have time to work with him from next season. At the moment there is no time and so he is working on the minds, he entered the locker room with determination and we are very happy with him.”

Borussia Dortmund coach Niko Kovac has pointed out how the high temperatures recorded at the Club World Cup favor South American teams.
Borussia Dortmund coach Niko Kovac has told the press how the high temperatures recorded in the United States at the Club World Cup favor South American teams, which are more accustomed to these temperatures compared to European teams.

Borussia Dortmund, Kovac complains about high temperatures in this Club World Cup: “Southern clubs have a great advantage due to the conditions, the heat”
We are only in the early stages of this Club World Cup, and there are already complaints about the high temperatures recorded in the stadiums hosting this American event. The coach who complains the most is a coach who trains a European team, from the northern part of the old continent: we are talking about Niko Kovac, coach of Borussia Dortmund, who pointed out how this favors South American teams to the press.
It all stems from the opening match against Fluminense of Thiago Silva, which ended in a draw, with scorching temperatures that the Brazilian club and players are always used to, and here is his statement: “In this tournament, we see that the southern clubs (America, ed.) have a great advantage due to the conditions, the heat”.
Even for the next match against the South Africans of Mamelodi Sundowns, temperatures of around 32°C are expected in Cincinnati, a temperature that is absolutely unbearable for a team from northern Europe: “For the spectators in the stadium, it’s incredibly hot. So you can imagine how difficult it is for the players: it’s 32 degrees in the shade, imagine with strong sun, inside the stadium, you have to add 3, 4 or even 5 degrees”.
However, Kovac is keen to point out that this is not an excuse, but rather an objective fact: “These are not excuses, it’s just an explanation. It’s very difficult, especially for Europeans. For players from the south, it’s easier, because they are used to these temperatures”.
