Pescara is back in Serie B, winning the play-off final against Ternana on penalties: let’s relive the 1998/99 season, where the Abruzzo team came close to Serie A by just one point, engaging in a battle with Reggina that lasted until the last matchday.

Pescara 1998/99, Serie A narrowly missed by one point: the battle with Reggina and the decisive 2-0 defeat at the Adriatico
Pescara returns to Serie B, after 4 years in Serie C, winning the play-off final against Ternana on penalties: in the 90s, the Abruzzo team was a regular presence in the second division, with relegation to Serie C1 only coming in the 2000/01 season. Let’s relive the 1998/99 season, where the biancoazzurri narrowly missed the return to Serie A by just one point, as Reggina made their first-ever appearance in the top flight.
The season started without high expectations: Ottavio Palladini, a key player in the Abruzzo midfield, had moved to Vicenza, Adriano Buffoni was in charge but failed to secure safety, and Francesco Giorgini took over. The squad was quite good, with players like Gelsi, Tentoni, Mauro Esposito, and Massimiliano Allegri, the current Milan coach who spent a significant part of his playing career in Abruzzo. The start was terrible: a 4-1 defeat to Verona led to Giorgini’s shaky position, and after a home loss to Napoli, he was sacked. Luigi De Canio took over, coming from Lucchese the previous season. With the new coach, Pescara started achieving results, ending the first half of the season in a promotion position.
For promotion to Serie A, the battle was with the surprising Reggina led by Bruno Bolchi, with a head-to-head duel that lasted until the direct clash on matchday 36 on May 30, 1999, at the Stadio Adriatico: Reggina won 2-0, with an own goal by Cannarsa and a goal by Possanzini. Then a victory in Lecce, leading to the final matchday with the two teams separated by one point: Reggina played in Turin against the already promoted Torino, while the Abruzzo team faced a disappointed Brescia at home. Pescara played its game, winning 3-2, with all radios tuned to the Delle Alpi, where the fate was sealed, ironically, by a Pescara native, Tonino Martino, whose decisive goal gave Reggina their first Serie A promotion. For Pescara, the wait for Serie A continued until 2012 with Zeman on the bench.

After the victory against Sampdoria, Palermo changes the hierarchy in attack: Le Douaron surpasses Brunori, is the captain really marginalized?
After the victory in Friday’s early game, Palermo changes the hierarchy in attack: Le Douaron, decisive in the match against the blue and white, surpasses Brunori. Is the Rosanero captain really marginalized?

Palermo, the victory against Sampdoria changes everything in attack: Le Douaron rises, Brunori falls, and the captain is marginalized
Palermo wins against Sampdoria, moves up the standings, and this match also marks a change in the hierarchy in the Rosanero attack: the match winner against the blue and white, Le Douaron, is now preferred by coach Filippo Inzaghi, while the Rosanero captain Matteo Brunori is losing confidence from the former Pisa coach.
Already on Thursday, the choice made it clear that the Frenchman was preferred over the hero of the Serie B return, officially Inzaghi said that they were following what was decided in training camp, which involved a significant turnover given the squad available to the Rosanero. Then, due to the team’s performance in the first part of the season, Inzaghi decided to give more space to former Brest player Le Douaron, causing Brunori to fall in the pecking order, and now he could even be a candidate for a transfer in the January market.
Therefore, the hierarchy has changed and the Rosanero have benefited from it, with 3 consecutive victories that haven’t happened since the days when a certain Eugenio Corini was sitting on the Barbera bench.

Frosinone, Alvini’s Revenge – Football Style
Views: 93
Frosinone reacts, wins again and flies to the top of Serie B. Tight standings with six teams within 5 points and open fight at the top and bottom.
It seemed like the week of the fall of giants, after the defeat of Monza against Venice. However, Frosinone against Pescara once again shows that they don’t want to leave anything to chance. The match starts uphill for Mister Alvini‘s men: in the 1st minute, Tonin scores the goal that seems to be able to direct the match and ruin the plans of the ciociari. It’s just an illusion.
Frosinone’s response is immediate and reflects well the character of this team: at the 5th minute, the equalizer comes from the usual Koustoupias. And here lies one of the secrets of the gialloblù: to get as many players as possible on the scoresheet, without depending on a single protagonist.
The game doesn’t take off immediately, Frosinone struggles but always stays in the game. At the end of the first half, there is also a shiver: Faraoni scores, but the goal is disallowed for a push on Calò before the tap-in. An episode that keeps the result balanced.
In the second half, at the 56th minute, A. Oyono seals the deal: a masterpiece shot from distance that sneaks under the crossbar and definitively changes the momentum of the game. A final scare for Frosinone in injury time: in the 94th minute, Pescara comes close to equalizing with Faraoni, who shoots at an almost empty goal, but finds the providential save of Cittadini on the line. A last, huge scare for the giallazzurri, who hold on and still bring home a very important victory. (It ends 2-1 for the Canaries)
Serie B, Frosinone on top but the standings remain tight
For Frosinone, it’s the eighth consecutive positive result and the fourth win in a row, coming after a tough cycle that includes three difficult away games in Bari, Reggio Emilia, and Pescara. Numbers that certify the solidity of Alvini’s team.
The Serie B standings remain very close: only five points separate the top six teams. Frosinone at the top with 34 points, then Monza at 31, Cesena at 30, Venice, Palermo, and Modena at 29.
Balance also in the lower zones: from the 16th to the 20th position, the gap is always five points, with Pescara last at 10 points. A team that, despite the position, has shown that they can put anyone in difficulty, even the league leaders. Nothing seems decided yet.
