Luciano Spalletti will no longer be the head coach of Italy. Tonight’s match against Moldova, valid for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, will be the final appearance on the Italian bench for the coach from Certaldo. A separation that came abruptly and unexpectedly after the heavy 3-0 defeat against Norway, which jeopardized the path to the World Cup.

An unusual dismissal, more in terms of timing than reasons. Although technically an dismissal, Spalletti agreed to end the relationship with a consensual resolution, waiving the severance package and approximately 13 months of salary, until the natural expiration of the contract. A gesture that Gravina greatly appreciated, considering it a sign of fairness and commitment to the Italian cause.

Also surprising was the way the announcement was made. Spalletti chose to speak alone at the press conference, without Gravina by his side. The president, as reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport, had offered to attend, but the head coach preferred to take personal responsibility for the communication, to avoid another 48 hours of tension and speculation.
