Technology breaks into gaming

The new tournament organized by FIFA, the Club World Cup, in the USA will see the introduction of some innovations and technological improvements at the referee level.
As explained by Pierluigi Collina, president of the FIFA Refereeing Committee, referees will have access to great technological aids, such as body cams, artificial intelligence for offside calls, and even a tablet for substitutions.

Club World Cup: Advancing Technology
Just a few days away from the start of the tournament, which will also involve two teams from our Serie A, Inter and Juventus, news has emerged on how match officials will be assisted by technology.
Discussing this was Pierluigi Collina, former international referee and current president of the FIFA Refereeing Committee. The first innovation to be introduced will be the use of body cams for referees. This experiment has already been done in some matches in the Premier League, Bundesliga, and Intercontinental Cup.
In short, these cameras will be positioned at eye level and everyone will have the referees’ point of view. Obviously, not everything will be shown. The images will be reviewed first and only the non-controversial ones will be broadcast. It is important to note that the footage and images used during the monitor review will be broadcast live on the stadiums’ jumbotrons, and once the review is over, the referee will announce the reasons for the decision.
“We believe this is a good opportunity to offer spectators a new experience, thanks to images taken from a different perspective. This will also help people better understand the decisions; it is important to be able to put ourselves in the referees’ shoes and see their point of view,” said the former Italian referee.
AI Serving Offside Calls
AI will play a significant role in the game. It will support the semi-automatic offside detection. “The system will send an instant audio notification to the assistant in case of an offside position so that the flag can be raised immediately,” explained Pierluigi Collina, president of the FIFA Refereeing Committee. This applies to clear cases, while for delicate situations, the information provided by VAR must be validated. Additionally, the Federation announced that the images will be visible on the stadium screens.
Club World Cup: Out with Paper, In with Tablets
Other innovations are being introduced. There will be a maximum time limit for goalkeepers. Previously, the goalkeeper could hold the ball for 6 seconds, but now it will be 8 seconds. If this maximum time is exceeded, a corner kick will be awarded to the opposing team.
Furthermore, there may be a resolution on double touches in penalties. A distinction between accidental and deliberate will be introduced. In the former case, the penalty will be retaken if it goes in. If it does not result in a goal, the opposing team will receive an indirect free-kick. A different scenario applies for intent. In this case, an indirect free-kick will be awarded.
Last but not least, digitalized substitutions. Tablets will be provided to the teams before the start of the match. These will replace paper documents, allowing substitutions to be managed digitally.
“These innovations demonstrate FIFA’s commitment to using technology and improving the overall football experience, with particular attention to enhancing transparency,” concluded the president and former international referee Collina.

Roma, a team with a dual identity: struggles in Europe
Views: 6
AS Roma started their journey in the Europa League rather negatively, with 2 defeats in the first 3 games. However, their performance in the league is quite different.
The home defeat against Viktoria Plzen left a bitter taste, along with some perplexity. Gasperini’s team has struggled to get going in the Europa League and has lost both home games so far. There have been too many defensive mistakes, which once again have cost the Giallorossi dearly.
Against Lille, it was Tsimikas who made a naive error that led to the French goal, while in yesterday’s game, it was young Ziolkowski who made the mistake and was substituted by Gasperini after just half an hour. While the defense seems to be the strong point of this team in the league, they are making too many mistakes and lack precision in the Europa League.
Roma, a sterile attack

Another rather evident problem, highlighted by the coach in the post-match interview, is the sterility of the attack. Apart from the Argentine Soulé, who has scored 3 goals in the league, the rest of the attack is struggling to perform.
Dovbyk and Ferguson seem out of place: two physically heavy players, rather clumsy with the ball at their feet, who are struggling to find the back of the net. The Ukrainian was booed off the Olimpico pitch yesterday, and every touch of the ball by the Irishman was met with loud grumbling from the entire stadium.
Dybala scored his first goal of the season from a penalty, but more is expected from him. Finally, Bailey is proving to be in form and able to make an impact, having come on in the last two games and igniting the Olimpico with his plays.
Gasperini must find a solution and hope to mentally recover his two strikers, who currently seem demoralized and disconnected from the team.
