Former Atalanta striker, Mateo Retegui, has become the highest-paid, and therefore most expensive, Italian player in history with his move to Al-Qadsiah.
Even the top scorer of the last Serie A could not resist the courtship of the Saudi Pro League, immediately declaring his willingness to move to the Saudi club.

Retegui: Mister 68 Million and Change
For many years now, the Saudi league has become the most coveted destination for many players to continue their footballing careers, not just for those nearing the end of their careers.
The turning point came in December 2022, with the arrival of a legend like Cristiano Ronaldo at Al Nassr. This transfer sparked global interest, triggering an escalation of transfers. Of course, a significant part of the persuasion was due to the pharaonic salary offers, managing to bring profiles to that world that were previously unthinkable.
Into this mix stepped the former Atalanta forward. The Bergamo team will receive around 68 million euros (specifically 68.3) from the sale of the 1999-born player, who will earn an annual salary of 16 million euros, excluding bonuses.
With this transfer, a new scenario opens up for our league. Until now, Serie A had provided Saudi Arabia with profiles that had reached the end of their Italian experience. Players like Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, Marcelo Brozovic, Luiz Felipe, and Igor Coronado. The last two, incidentally, are among the few Italians seen in the Saudi Pro League, a choice made by Simone Inzaghi and specifically Mateo Retegui.
The Most Expensive Azzurri
Joining former Atalanta player on the podium in this special “economic” ranking are former Milan player Sandro Tonali and Federico Chiesa. The Brescia native, now with Newcastle, moved to the Magpies for around 58.9 million euros.
For the Genoa native, his transfer from Fiorentina to Juventus amounted to 57.2 million euros. Just outside the podium, by about 200 thousand euros, was the transfer to Chelsea in England from Napoli by Jorginho (57 M).
It’s worth mentioning two “records,” if they can be called that, of two retired Italians. We’re talking about Gianluigi Buffon and Christian Vieri, respectively 5th and 6th on the list. Super Gigi moved from Parma to Juventus for 52.9 million, while Bobo joined Inter from Lazio for 46.5 million.
But this article cannot be concluded without mentioning the first Italian ever to provide his services to the Arab league: Roberto Donadoni. The former Milan midfielder moved to Al-Ittihad for free in 1999.
Not only that, he also won the league. However, obviously, he will not be remembered in the same way as the Atalanta striker.

No good news for Cagliari of Pisacane, who is coming off a home defeat against Bologna: injury for a defender.
The Sardinians are preparing for the next league challenge against Hellas Verona. However, the coach must deal with physical problems affecting a key player for him: Yerry Mina. The Colombian suffered an injury in the match against Bologna in the last round and is now working separately to recover. His condition will be evaluated ahead of the next league match.

“Coach Pisacane’s red and blue team took to the field this afternoon at the CRAI Sport Center for the resumption of training: thus began the week that will lead Cagliari to the match of the 8th round of the Serie A championship against Hellas Verona, scheduled for Sunday, October 26.
The first part of the session was dedicated to ball possession exercises, followed by a series of small-sided games. To finish, an aerobic workout. Yerry Mina, who needs to recover from a strain in the left thigh flexors, worked individually, along with Alessandro Di Pardo, Marko Rog, Nicola Pintus, and Boris Radunovic.
Tomorrow, Wednesday 22, a new training session is scheduled for the morning.”
