The first press conference of Fredberg, Donati, and Mancini at Sampdoria leaves more doubts than certainties. No indication on market, budget, or objectives.

Sampdoria: more doubts than certainties

Sometimes, more than first impressions, disappointed expectations weigh more. And what was supposed to be the official presentation of the new sports direction of Sampdoria, with Jesper Fredberg (Sports CEO), Massimo Donati (coach), and Andrea Mancini (sports director), slipped away like an unfulfilled promise. Not for lack of good intentions, but for the absence of what was truly expected: defined boundaries and at least a hint of a vision.

No numbers, no objectives, not even a sentence suggesting whether the ambition is to be in the left or right part of the table. Just a long string of generic concepts and, in some ways, worn-out ones: “do our best,” “build a shared philosophy,” “focus on the group,” “use ‘we’.” Beautiful words, indeed. But they are not enough, as they are so overused that they sound like echoes of past seasons. The fact that more doubts than enthusiasm loomed among the public and the press is not a minor detail.

Once again, the absence of ownership weighed heavily. Matteo Manfredi, did not show up. Just at a time when Sampdoria would need exactly the opposite: a visible, recognizable presence capable of giving substance to the word “project.”

Getting Involved

What emerged, instead, is a certain lucidity in recognizing the complexity of the moment. Fredberg, Donati, and Mancini know exactly where they have ended up. They have accepted a challenge that at the moment seems more like a bet. And they do not hide it. There was no attempt to sell illusions, and this should be acknowledged. But the vagueness of the answers does not help bridge the gap between the reality of the field and the idea of a future that is still undefined.

For now, there is only a willingness to get involved. It is something, but it is not enough. The Dorian fans are coming from troubled seasons, worn out by vanished promises and aborted projects. Today they ask for clarity, perspectives, a minimum of concreteness. Instead, they find themselves once again holding on to “we will work hard.” A déjà vu rather than a new beginning.

The judgment, however, is postponed. It couldn’t be otherwise. This first official step of the new technical trio did not bring the momentum that many hoped for. It raised, if anything, more questions. And confirmed that the real starting point is still to be defined.

After a very active transfer window, with the sale of Palumbo to the rosanero, the third most lucrative in the history of the yellow and blue, and the departures of veterans like Gagno, Zaro, and Duca, the management focused on experienced players like Zampano, Chichizola, Adorni, and Di Mariano, as well as promising young talents like Zanimacchia, Sersanti, and Pyyhtiä.

Sottil, coming from challenging experiences at Udinese and Sampdoria, with a brief stint at Salernitana as well, has managed to unite the group and give a clear identity to the team. Today, Modena has the best attack and defense in the league, and above all, a new sense of awareness.

It’s only the eighth round, but the feeling is clear: with Sottil, Serie A is no longer a dream but a concrete goal.

Not only Grattieri, but also Melillo commented on the situation of the club in Castellammare di Stabia: “The aim of the measure is to remove the company from mafia influence, which was particularly evident. The entire service network was subject to clan conditioning due to indifference, underestimation, and connivance. Even the boss D’Alessandro’s father-in-law was previously president of Juve Stabia. Now it is important to support the company, with the commitment of the Prefecture.”

Space is also given to the words of the prefect of Naples, Michele di Bari: “The repression action of the judiciary has identified failings in this company and now it is necessary to accompany it on a path of legality, because a series of companies that will already be examined by the Antimafia inter-force group of the Prefecture with the issuance of possible consequent measures.”

While the Rosanero fans hoped for a win, a draw is enough to strive for a place at the top of the table, aiming for promotion. It is hoped that the Barbera stadium will witness similar crowds in the future, making the Zamparini-Guidolin era not seem so distant.
