The women’s football movement in Italy in recent years has been gaining more and more space, attracting the interest of millions of fans who live and breathe sports in our beloved country. Despite there still being a vast majority of people who “snub” this category, in recent seasons there have been several events and achievements that have elevated women’s football to a very high level.

We cannot overlook the transition to professionalism (1st July 2022), reaching milestones that were unthinkable just a few years ago, such as reaching an audience of 40 thousand spectators for a single match.

Compared to other European countries (Spain and England above all), the difference in terms of audience and interest surrounding women’s football is still significant. In the summer, the performance of the Italian National Team (reaching the semi-finals) at the European Championship held in Switzerland certainly brought a lot of attention to the entire movement, but there is still a long way to go to shed the right light on the Italian championship.

By also capitalizing on the irreverence of the column title “Macché, te lo guardi?”, we want to shed further light on a reality that is increasingly taking hold in our beloved country: women’s football. Because in the end, we Italians are only interested in watching and being able to comment on the game, regardless of who is playing.

Serie A Women, the second matchday of the championship

The Serie A Women is running smoothly with the second matchday of the championship. Many surprises and last-minute upsets accompany us in the second round. Stealing the scene is Como, who beats a Juventus at home undergoing a total turnover: only one point in two matches for the Bianconeri, who are still struggling to find their game and continuity.

Leading the top of the table, we find a very interesting trio: Roma, Lazio, and Napoli. Roma, with Rossettini, thanks to the usual Giugliano, clinches three important points at 91′ away at Milan. Lazio easily beats Genoa, relegating them to the bottom of the table, while Napoli defeats the newly promoted Ternana in a spectacular and pyrotechnic 4-3 finish.

A 2-2 draw between Fiorentina and Inter, while Parma clinches the Emilian derby in extremis against Sassuolo. The fatigue of the cup matches is already being felt, forcing the Old Lady and the Biscione to drop crucial points.

Simonetti and Goldoni lead Lazio to the top spot

Lazio clinches its second consecutive victory and the top spot in the standings by defeating Genoa. Right from the start, the Biancocelesti take the lead with Simonetti. Unfortunate for the Biancocelesti player who has to leave the field prematurely at 30′ due to a physical problem. Lazio, however, dominates the field and faces no risks, with Genoa struggling to reach Durante’s goal.

In the second half, the story remains the same with Lazio dictating the game’s pace. It’s just a dress rehearsal because at 64′, the Biancocelesti find the 2-0 thanks to Goldoni’s header on a brilliant cross from Le Bihan, increasingly a beacon for the Roman club.

Genoa reopens the game at 84′ with the first shot on target. The Lazio defense caught off guard, with Vigilucci unleashing a shot from the edge of the area that finds its way under the crossbar on the opposite side. No chance for Durante. Como’s impressive upset at Juventus: the Bianconeri have never looked so bad

Great upset by Como, beating Juventus away under coach Canzi. Despite a good start in the Women’s Champions League, for the second consecutive matchday, the Bianconeri fail to secure a win. Never in Serie A history has the Old Lady remained winless in the first two matchdays.

At Biella, Juventus field a completely revamped team, eyeing the second Champions League match. Despite this, the two teams provide an entertaining first half full of chances. Girelli, Godo, Beccari, and Krumbiegel on one side, Nischler, and former players Lehmann and Pavan on the other, test the two goalkeepers. The captivating first half gives way to a second where Juventus pushes harder, raising the pressure and forcing the Como defense into extraordinary efforts. At the hour mark, Beccari comes close to scoring with a rocket from distance hitting the post.

However, it’s Como who strikes the decisive blow with Nischler’s first goal of the season at 84′. A corner from the left to the far post for number 7, left completely unmarked to volley home. Inter avoids defeat in extremis: Fiorentina responds excellently

A thrilling draw at Viola Park between Fiorentina and Inter. The home team, led by Pinones Arce, starts strong, putting pressure on the Nerazzurri’s defense both in open play and set pieces. Many would say no, but don’t tell that to Sassarini’s girls who, after upsetting Fiorentina, also defeat the newly promoted Ternana.

The hosts take the lead after just 3 minutes with Pastrenge, scoring Ternana’s historic first goal in Serie A. However, Napoli responds and equalizes at 19′ with Nielsen, before surging ahead towards the end of the first half with goals from Muth and Brooks. In the second half, after providing the assist for Brooks, Kozak decides to take the spotlight with an Olympic goal. A goal directly from the corner flag, securing a four-goal lead for Napoli in less than an hour of play.

The Umbrians do not give up and reduce the deficit at 64′ with Pirone’s penalty. The home team’s pushing eventually pays off too late, with Massimino scoring the final goal in the 94th minute.
