After seven consecutive victories, Inter falls at Maradona against Napoli, but does so with their heads held high. The Nerazzurri return to Milan aware that they created a lot, especially in the first half, when they deserved more.

In the second half, however, a different Inter was seen: less focused, more disjointed, and perhaps too confident in their abilities. The goals from McTominay and Anguissa came from two situations where the defense was overly optimistic, underestimating the danger.

At 2-1 from the Scotsman, Bastoni, Acerbi, and Zielinski see the midfielder’s run but no one follows him. The same story at 3-1 from Anguissa, with Barella and Acerbi completely losing their man. The former Lazio player could have stopped the Cameroonian with a foul, even at the risk of a yellow card, which could have kept the team alive.

Instead, that goal cut the legs off the Nerazzurri, who felt the blow mentally.

Inter, the midfield is too important

With over twenty minutes still to play, Inter had all the time to try and reopen the game, but a move by Chivu effectively sealed Napoli’s victory.

At the 73rd minute, the Romanian coach decided to substitute Çalhanoğlu and Barella to introduce Frattesi and Sučić. This was in addition to the forced substitution of Mkhitaryan in the first half, replaced by Zielinski. From that moment, Inter found themselves with a midfield completely different from the starting one, poorly integrated and unable to keep up with Napoli’s pace.

The Nerazzurri started to struggle more in ball distribution and construction, allowing the Azzurri to manage the ball with more calmness. It’s true that the two second-half goals came when Barella and Çalhanoğlu were still on the field, indicating that they had also lost their shine. However, Chivu’s attempt to bring freshness to the midfield did not produce the desired effects.

Now, however, no dramas: on Wednesday at San Siro, Fiorentina will come, an immediate opportunity to bounce back and prove that this defeat is just a bump in the road.

Cristante and Mancini are, up to now, the only Roma players present in the National team roster, who under the guidance of Spalletti and then Gattuso have obtained regular call-ups.

Now, however, something seems to be brewing: today, in fact, watching the match between Sassuolo and Roma will not only be fans and professionals, but also a special guest, namely the CT of the Italian National team, Gennaro Gattuso.

Nothing new, considering that the head coach is progressively visiting the training centers of Serie A teams, with the aim of getting a clearer idea about the players and, perhaps, making changes to the list of call-ups destined to try to secure the presence of the Azzurri at the upcoming World Cup. In this perspective, let’s try to understand who could be the players potentially eligible for the upcoming National team matches: first on Thursday, November 13 against Moldova, and then on Sunday, November 16 for the big match Italy-Norway, scheduled at 8:45 PM at San Siro Stadium in Milan.

Sassuolo-Roma: the special observers

The possible eligibles include three Roma players and only one Sassuolo player.

In order, the first name on the list could be that of Lorenzo Pellegrini, who after finding space in the Giallorossi squad again, after a troubled last season, could now try again to secure the Azzurri jersey.

Another name in view of the upcoming call-ups is Pisilli, who until the last match in the Europa League — that of the defeat against the Czechs of Viktoria Plzeň — had often remained on the bench observing his teammates. A partial change was seen on Thursday night, when just after entering, the young Giallorossi midfielder had temporarily equalized for his team, only to have the goal disallowed for offside.

Finally, we cannot fail to mention Domenico Berardi, who disappeared prematurely from the National team radar after his last call-up in November 2023. Mainly due to the subsequent period, with two seasons spent with a team in significant difficulties and then in Serie B, which inevitably impacted his visibility in the eyes of the CT.
