Leading Milan is the toughest challenge I have faced
Views:43
Gerry Cardinale, owner of Milan, in a podcast discussed his experience leading the club, challenges, and future projects. Among these, the construction of a new stadium and the goal of bringing Milan to the economic level of English teams.
Gerry Cardinale, head of RedBird and owner of Milan, recently appeared on the podcast “The Varsity” to share his experience leading the Rossoneri club. Cardinale described managing a team like Milan as the most challenging task ever, especially due to the resistance of the football ecosystem to change.
“In three years, we have been positive in terms of cash flow for the first time in 17 years. And I don’t keep that money for myself, I reinvest it in the team. We have spent more than any other Serie A team in the last summer transfer window. We are building a new stadium,” Cardinale stated.
Comparison with the Premier League
Cardinale then talked about the differences between Serie A and the Premier League, the latter being seen as the real competition for Milan. “The Premier League is an economic black hole that drains wealth from the continent. They have almost four times the TV revenues of other European leagues, and it’s a problem,” explained the Milan owner.
Furthermore, Cardinale highlighted how, despite Serie A being the most competitive league, it is not economically rewarded. “We can’t get significant deals for international rights. Why? Because broadcasters only want the best, hence the Super League phenomenon,” he commented.
Milan’s new stadium and the Premier League goal
Among Cardinale’s future projects is the construction of a new stadium with the help of Tim Romani, one of the best in the field. “Once completed, I want to share the model with other Serie A teams because they are not my real competition. My goal, as I mentioned, is the Premier League,” he affirmed.
Gerry Cardinale concluded the interview by expressing his desire to innovate, following the example of Berlusconi or Steinbrenner, the historic owner of the New York Yankees. “We will have to change the economic paradigm so that everyone in the ecosystem can support themselves. The key is: you have to be able to pay for yourself,” he emphasized.
