Roma, Bailey, and Tsimikas on the verge of departure – Soccer style
The underwhelming performances of Roma’s new signings Bailey and Tsimikas are pushing towards a departure in January: the Greek and the Jamaican struggle to make an impact.
It has not been the expected impact for Leon Bailey and Kostas Tsimikas in the Roma jersey. Arriving in August as potential key players for Gian Piero Gasperini’s squad, both were considered valuable alternatives capable of strengthening the offensive and defensive departments of the Giallorossi team. However, after a few months of ups and downs, the reality on the field has shown that the integration of the two wingers has been more challenging than anticipated.
In particular, Greek full-back Tsimikas was identified by the management as the natural replacement for Angelino. After a promising start, with solid performances and some interesting moments, the player seemed capable of displacing the starter, also due to the prolonged absence of the Spaniard. The match against Nice, with two assists to his name, seemed to confirm his potential.
However, Tsimikas’ performance has gradually declined since then: serious errors and unconvincing displays, including a decisive one in Roma-Lille, have led Gasperini to limit his usage. The situation has been further complicated by the choice of Wesley on the left, with Celik pushed higher on the right, which has practically closed the space for the Greek, who was already struggling with continuity issues in the last two seasons at Liverpool.
On the other hand, Leon Bailey has failed to find the right rhythm due to two significant injuries that sidelined him for a long time. The Jamaican has only registered one assist and a disallowed goal in the last Europa League match against Celtic, alternating between substitute appearances and insufficient performances. Recently, Gasperini decided to field him, even preferring him over Dybala, but the on-field response did not yield the desired results, despite the coach’s attempts to motivate him in press conferences.
Considering their inconsistent performances, the two players could return to their respective parent clubs in the January transfer market. According to reports from the Corriere dello Sport, Roma is evaluating the early termination of the loans, a decision that would free up salary space and enable the pursuit of new targets in the market. This decision appears to be primarily technical: the Giallorossi aim to build a squad more aligned with the coach’s ideas and the tactical requirements of the league, inevitably leaving little room for players who struggle to fully integrate into Gasperini’s project.
The season for Bailey and Tsimikas with Roma risks ending prematurely, with the club ready to turn the page and seek new solutions.
