Brest-PSG, match valid for the Champions League playoff, pits the Bretons (home team) against the French champions.

Brest and PSG face off once again, after the reigning champions beat the home team 5-2. However, this time it’s not in Ligue 1, let alone in Brittany, as Eric Roy’s team plays their home games in Champions League in Guingamp. It might seem like a one-sided national “derby,” but it’s not. In fact, last year both encounters between these two teams ended in a 2-2 draw.

Team News – Brest

In goal, Bizot will start, while in defense Haidara (given the injuries of Amavi and Locko) is the only natural left-back available. Lala is ready on the right, with Chardonnet and N’Diaye favored over Coulibaly and the returning Le Cardinal to form the central defensive partnership. In midfield, Less-Melou had a massive game against Nantes and will be retained. It remains to be seen who will play alongside him and in which formation.

The injury to Del Castillo could push the French coach to revert to a 4-3-1-2 formation. If a three-man midfield is chosen, the trio seen against Nantes is likely to be retained, with Magnetti and Mahdi Camara flanking Less-Melou. The same applies if the 4-3-3 formation from the last league game is kept, while in a 4-2-3-1 setup, Edimilson Fernandes could also come back into contention.

However, this formation did not pay off in the league match and Del Castillo’s injury is an additional deterrent. Therefore, a return to the 4-3-1-2 could be on the cards, with Kamory Doumbia supporting Mama Baldé (preferred over Sima) and Ajorque. If the 4-3-3 is retained, Pereira-Lage and Ibrahim Salah could also be back in contention, with Sima and Faivre as other options. Mama Baldé can also play as a winger if needed.

Team News – PSG

Luis Enrique is without Zaire-Emery but has a refreshed Hakimi back after a rest. The Moroccan, who was on the bench against Monaco, is set to return to the starting lineup. Joao Neves has adapted to play as a makeshift right-back in his absence, but now one of the midfield quartet (alongside Désiré Doué, Vitinha, and Fabian Ruiz) will have to make way to bring back the former Inter player from the start.

The defensive line will be completed by Marquinhos, Pacho, and Nuno Mendes. PSG is not expected to rotate heavily for this game, but Lucas Beraldo and Lucas Hernandez are pushing for opportunities.

In midfield, Vitinha looks set to retain his place, with Doué, Fabian, and Kang-In-Lee (considering the likely retention of the former Benfica player) vying for the final spot.

The front three, composed of Barcola and Kvara flanking Dembélé, is unlikely to be altered, but both the South Korean and the former Rennes player can also play further forward. In goal, of course, is Donnarumma.

The Champions League often brings surprises, but for Athletic Bilbao and Galatasaray it wasn’t the case: both clubs won 3-1.

Athletic Bilbao-Qarabağ

Although the Spanish club struggled a bit more than expected, they secured a solid 3-1 victory. “Ready, set, go” (quoting Fabri Fibra) and Qarabağ scored in the first minute of the game.

Both goals came from outside the box, both with the same numbers. The first at the 3rd minute, the second at the 33rd.

Expected goals for Galatasaray were 4.09, with 38% possession. Expected goals for Bodø/Glimt were 1.41, with 62% possession.

Both teams collected less than what they sowed in this match, and despite possession, the rest of the data is clear. 23 shots by the Turks compared to 8 by the Norwegians.

The third and final goal for Galatasaray came with Akgün scoring on the rebound from Haikin in the 60th minute.

For the Norwegians, the consolation goal came in the 75th minute, with Helmersen taking advantage of imperfect coverage by Galatasaray‘s defenders. The match ended 3-1.
