Sampdoria’s last-minute salvation like Lazio in 1987 – Soccer style
Yesterday, Sampdoria officially secured their place in Serie B, also winning the play-out return match against Salernitana: a miracle akin to Lazio in 1987.
Yesterday, Sampdoria secured their place in Serie B by winning the play-out return match against Salernitana: a feat reminiscent of Lazio’s escape in 1987, when they avoided relegation to Serie C in a playoff against Campobasso and Taranto.

Sampdoria, the blucerchiati secure their place in Serie B after play-out: a feat similar to Lazio in 1986/87
Yesterday marked the final verdict of the 2024/25 season: the last team to be relegated to Serie C is Salernitana, while Sampdoria unexpectedly secures their safety, partly due to sporting justice condemning the already failed Brescia to relegation. The achievement of the blucerchiati seemed to many like that of Lazio in 1986/87 under Eugenio Fascetti, known for the infamous -9 point deduction.
Of course, there are some differences: the blucerchiati did not start with any handicap, unlike the biancocelesti who faced a significant disadvantage due to the Totonero scandal. For many Lazio fans, that survival was an epic feat, thanks to the indefatigable Caso and the goals of Giuliano Fiorini, although the decisive goal for survival against Campobasso was scored by Fabio Poli.
Sampdoria’s safety is attributed to Massimo Coda’s 8 goals, a tally similar to Fiorini’s for that Lazio. Additionally, the blucerchiata fans have shown pride, similar to the biancoceleste fans, even though their team did not face relegation to Serie C. Ultimately, these situations are a result of disappointing past seasons, both for the biancocelesti back then and the blucerchiati today.
In the end, what matters is the result, and an achievement like this is as valuable as a league title: it could bode well for the blucerchiati, as Lazio returned to Serie A the following year. Perhaps they can achieve the same, as they now begin to plan their future calmly in Bogliasco.

Andrea Sottil revives Modena: first place, best attack and best defense in Serie B. The team dreams big after the draw with Palermo.
The most anticipated match of the eighth round of Serie B was undoubtedly between Palermo and Modena, the top two teams in the league. In the end, it did not disappoint: many chances on both sides, great intensity, and a 1-1 final score that definitely favors the canaries. With this result, in fact, Sottil’s team remains in first place, with a two-point lead over the rosanero.
However, Modena may have deserved something more, considering their performance. No matter, though, because Sottil himself spoke of an “extraordinary performance” from his players after the game, emphasizing how a result like this can only boost confidence for the upcoming matches.
After all, it’s not easy for everyone to play with such personality at the home of the team considered by many as the main favorite for promotion.
Modena, promotion target
The credit for this season’s start goes largely to Andrea Sottil, chosen in the summer to lead a completely revamped team. After a very eventful transfer window, with the sale of Palumbo to the rosanero, the third most lucrative in the history of the yellow and blue, and the farewells of veterans like Gagno, Zaro, and Duca, the management focused on experienced players like Zampano, Chichizola, Adorni, and Di Mariano, but also on promising young talents like Zanimacchia, Sersanti, and Pyyhtiä.
Sottil, coming off challenging experiences at Udinese and Sampdoria, with a brief stint at Salernitana, managed to unify the group and give a clear identity to the team. Today, Modena has the best attack and defense in the league, and above all, a newfound awareness.
It’s only the eighth round, but the feeling is clear: with Sottil, Serie A is no longer a dream but a concrete goal.
