The CEO of Serie A participated in the Global Sports Business event. Read De Siervo’s words with us.

During the global sports business event, the CEO of Serie A made statements at SPOBIS. In particular, De Siervo addressed topics such as the high number of matches, the Super League, and the issue of stadiums in Serie A.

De Siervo’s words

The issue of too many matches.

“In recent years, the number of matches has significantly increased due to the new formats introduced by UEFA and FIFA. However, while there is constructive dialogue with UEFA to balance the needs of European competitions with national ones, there has been no such discussion with FIFA. For this reason, together with the European footballers’ union, we have initiated legal action as European Leagues. The result is that the calendar is becoming more and more congested. This means that teams have to manage forced rotations, injuries, and fixture distribution. This directly impacts the quality and competitiveness of our league.”

On the Super League
“In recent years, European football has faced crucial challenges, including the attempt to introduce a closed model like the Super League. This project was firmly rejected by fans, UEFA, and all European Leagues because we believe in football based on sporting merit and open competition. Today, I am convinced that the idea of the Super League is definitively ‘dead’.”

One of the main reasons is that the big clubs, promoters of this initiative, are already benefiting significantly from the new Champions League format. This model guarantees them very high revenues, reducing interest in alternative solutions. Just look at some numbers: Inter, for example, has already received 90 million euros from UEFA in this first part of the season, a figure in line with what they received by winning the last Italian championship.”

On stadiums
“If there is one aspect where our football has lagged behind, it is undoubtedly in infrastructure. Today, the main critical issue in Serie A is not the quality of the game or competitiveness but the fact that many of our stadiums do not meet international standards. The assignment of Euro 2032 to Italy and Turkey is accelerating the processes for the construction of new facilities. In particular, in strategic cities like Milan and Rome, as well as Bologna, Cagliari, Empoli, Florence, and Genoa. However, bureaucracy continues to be a huge obstacle. Paradoxically, at this historic moment, funds, projects, and ideas are not lacking. What is lacking is the ability to turn these plans into concrete actions.”
