Eighteenth meeting with “Macché te lo guardi?”, the weekly column by Calciostyle dedicated to the 2024/2025 Serie A women’s championship.

The women’s football movement in Italy has been gaining more and more space in recent years, attracting the interest of millions of fans who live and breathe sports in our beloved country. Despite there still being a vast majority of people who “snub” this category, in recent seasons there have been several events and facts that have elevated women’s football to a very high level.

We cannot ignore the transition to professionalism (1st July 2022) and reaching milestones that were unthinkable just a few years ago, such as reaching an audience of 40,000 spectators for a single match.

Compared to other European countries (Spain and England above all), the difference in terms of audience and interest surrounding women’s football is, to quote a famous Roman expression, “still a dear friend”, meaning very wide.

Also, leveraging the irreverence of the column’s title “Macché, te lo guardi?”, we want to shed further light on a reality that is increasingly gaining ground in our beloved country: women’s football. Because in the end, what matters to us Italians is just watching and being able to comment on the game, regardless of who is playing.

Women’s Serie A, recap of the eighteenth matchday

The eighteenth and final matchday of the Serie A women’s regular season gives us a mountain of goals, with several exciting matches full of spectacle and goals. In fact, three matches recorded a total of 20 goals! The day kicks off with Lazio and Inter in the most thrilling game of the day: 4-4 with a poker by Piemonte. Sassuolo secures three points against Sampdoria, relegating them to the bottom of the table.

A goalless draw between Fiorentina and Roma, while Juventus strolls to victory at Milan, dealing a heavy blow to the rossoneri. A crucial win for Napoli in terms of survival in the match against Como, who suffer their fourth consecutive defeat. The team from Como has to yield the last spot for the championship group to Milan, despite the heavy defeat.

Lazio – Inter 4 – 4

How to open the day with a better game than this? The match at Fersini in Formello between Lazio and Inter provides 90 minutes full of emotions and reversals of fortune for all passionate fans.

Right from the start, the Nerazzurre take the lead with a goal by former Roma Tomaselli. A pass from Cambiaghi for the midfielder’s run into the box, who cuts inside and beats Karresmaa with a right-footed shot deflected by D’Auria. No sooner had they scored, the Inter doubled their lead with Csiszar. Schough receives on the left side of the area and serves the Hungarian midfielder centrally at the edge of the box, who wastes no time in unleashing a sharp low shot near the near post where Karresma can’t reach.

The first half ends without further drama from either team, closing the first 45 minutes with a 0-2 lead in favor of Piovani’s side. The Piemonte show begins at the hour mark: the Lazio striker levels the game with two true striker’s goals within 3 minutes.

At 62′, Benoit finds the 97′ player in the box, and, thanks to a colossal mistake by Milinkovic, she fires a precise volley past Runarsdottir from close range. Two minutes later, Piemonte scores her personal brace. A cross from the left by Zanoli to the Lazio number 18, who volleys with her left foot to put the ball into the top corner, restoring parity.

The 7 minutes from the 62nd to the 69th minute are only for the brave at heart: after Piemonte’s double, Inter regains a two-goal advantage. Indeed, no sooner had they celebrated the equalizer than Lazio concedes a goal from distance by Magull. The former Bayern Munich midfielder receives at the edge of the area and unleashes a bullet near the near post where Karresma cannot reach. At the last minute, the 97′ player also scores the fourth goal of the day: a replica of the goal she scored a few minutes earlier. Receiving with her back to the goal, Piemonte turns, this time to the right, and with a precise right-footed shot to the far corner, she unleashes the full joy of the entire Grassadonia team. A day that the former Milan and Roma forward, author of her first Serie A poker, will hardly forget.

Thus ends the regular season for Inter and Lazio, with the Nerazzurre qualifying for the championship group in second place, 7 points behind the leader Juventus. The Biancocelesti, on the other hand, finish in seventh place, securing a spot in the survival group.

Sampdoria falls again: bottom of the table

Sampdoria – Sassuolo 0 – 2

In the final matchday of the regular season, Sampdoria also falls to Sassuolo and is relegated to the bottom of the table. At La Sciorba, the home side starts better with a shot by Arcangeli forcing Durand to make extraordinary saves and fly to put the ball out for a corner.

Despite a better start by the Sampdoria, Sassuolo takes the lead at the first opportunity with a winning header by Sabatino. Clelland enters the box and tries a shot, the Sampdoria defense intercepts but gifts the ball to the onrushing Philtjens who manages to cross for Sabatino who can’t miss from close range. Pisani tries to intercept the ball but fails to deflect it enough to prevent the goal.

Sampdoria does what they can, creating some danger for Durand, but ultimately, they are forced to surrender. Sassuolo gains ground and starts to produce more noteworthy actions. At 73′, the black and green close the match with a thunderous strike by Clelland. The number 25 smashes the ball from the left just as she enters the box, sending a rocket into the far corner, leaving the Blucerchiato goalkeeper motionless.

Both teams will play in the survival group during the post-season, with Sassuolo surely playing more carefree than Sampdoria, who slipped to the bottom of the table after Napoli’s victory over Como.

Boredom at Viola Park: a draw that serves no one

Fiorentina – Roma 0 – 0

A lot of boredom and few joys in the match at Viola Park between Fiorentina by De La Fuente and Roma by Spugna. The two teams fail to capitalize on Inter’s slip at Lazio and do not close the gap on the Nerazzurre, losing more ground on the leader Juventus.

After a dull first half with only one dangerous chance for each side, in the second half, Roma tries to secure the three points with some flashes, culminating with Haavi’s shot hitting the crossbar. Fiorentina pushes towards the end with some offensive attempts, but after three minutes of stoppage time, the match ends in a draw.

The draw serves neither of the two teams, both of which qualify for the championship group. The Giallorosse continue to lose ground on Juventus, further diminishing their already slim hopes of truly competing for the league title.

Girelli show: Juventus only need 6 minutes

Milan – Juventus 0 – 6

Juventus overwhelm Milan in the final round of the regular season. It’s all too easy for the Bianconere who put the game to bed against the Rossoneri in just five minutes. In the 25th minute, a corner from the right by Boattin finds Girelli‘s head, who rises and, thanks to a fortuitous deflection by the Diavolo defense, beats Giuliani. Two minutes later, Juventus doubles the lead with Boattin.

A lightning counterattack by the Vecchia Signora sees Bonansea one-on-one with the Rossoneri goalkeeper, and she serves Boattin on the left, who taps the ball into the net with an open goal. Four minutes later, Girelli scores her second, with a penalty after Krumbiegel is brought down in the box by Stokic. Girelli steps up and perfectly places a right-footed shot into the corner, completing her brace.

The Juventus striker isn’t done yet and at 39′, she completes her hat-trick. Krumbiegel breaks into the box and delivers a cross, the Rossoneri defense clears poorly, leaving the ball loose in the air for Girelli to head past Giuliani, effectively sealing the match.

In the second half, Juventus remains dominant and extends their lead to 4-0 in the 89th minute with a goal from former Bergamaschi. Vangsgaard sets up Lehmann, who misses a simple right-footed tap-in, then tries with her left foot but finds the Rossoneri defense’s block. Bergamaschi is quickest to react to the rebound from close range.

At the 90+1′, there is more celebration for former PSG Vangsgaard, who scores a beautiful curling shot at the far post from a precise pass by Krumbiegel.

Juventus confirms their top position, extending their lead over Inter and Roma, while Milan, despite the heavy defeat, secures the last spot to access the championship group thanks to Como’s loss to Napoli.

Napoli – Como 4 – 2

The second victory in the league for Napoli as they leave the bottom of the table and prepare for a crucial survival group to stay in the top flight.

A high-paced game between the home side Napoli and Como, with chances on both ends. Taking advantage of them better is the team from Como, who takes the lead just before the 45th minute with a goal by Kramzar. A cross from the left by Petzelberger for the well-timed run of the 2006-born player, who punishes the Napoli defense with a right-footed volley.

The second half starts with all Napoli. In the 49th minute, a long ball from the midfield by Lundorf finds Muth. Although Gilardi momentarily intercepts, the goal remains unguarded, allowing Sliskovic to score with a simple tap-in.

Three minutes later, Banusic takes the stage with an individual effort. The Napoli number 10 receives at the edge of the box, bypasses the first opponent with a nutmeg, steers left to avoid the second, and fires a low left-footed shot past Gilardi at the near post.

In the 77th minute, Como finds an unexpected equalizer again through Kramzar. A cross from the left by Guagni, touched by Pettenuzzo, the ball stays in the box, and Kramzar confirms her predatory instinct with another tap-in.
