After Ajax-Lazio, the biancoceleste coach, Marco Baroni, spoke to Sky Sport microphones to comment on the match.

Here is an excerpt of the words from the coach of the Roman team after the victory in Ajax–Lazio.

Ajax-Lazio, Baroni’s words

Baroni started by commenting on the possibility of dreaming big:

“It is essential to work with humility, but also with ambition. Every improvement of the team comes from work and dedication, as we saw today. We had to attack them, prevent them from passing, press high. I am satisfied: it was a mature, compact, spirited, and attentive performance.”

When asked about the growth of young players like Tchaouna and Dele-Bashiru, the coach replied:

“I am happy. I understood that the team needed motivation and, when I did that, the boys responded with commitment and a desire to improve. It doesn’t surprise me: they are quality young players. They need to play, make mistakes, and the team supports them. Only then can they grow, facing games like this.”

He then commented on Tchaouna’s defensive progress:

“He has improved a lot. Even in the Coppa Italia, he did well with internal marking. He shows attention and thinks about plays, but he needs to understand when to avoid losing dangerous balls. He has quality, can shoot with both feet. I want full-backs who can cut inside and shoot, and he has an important shot.”

The biancoceleste coach concluded by talking about Isaksen and the potential of Dele-Bashiru:

“Dele-Bashiru has a different style, less disciplined. We tried him in this role because he has enormous physicality and good technique. He just needs to align his thinking speed with his leg speed: when he does that, he is of a very high level. He is really strong. Isaksen faced established players, but we had to give him a chance, and I am satisfied with his goal against Napoli: he knew how to make the right play.”

Roma, a team with a dual identity: struggles in Europe

AS Roma started their journey in the Europa League rather negatively, with 2 defeats in the first 3 games. However, their performance in the league is quite different.

The home defeat against Viktoria Plzen left a bitter taste, along with some perplexity. Gasperini’s team has struggled to get going in the Europa League and has lost both home games so far. There have been too many defensive mistakes, which once again have cost the Giallorossi dearly.

Against Lille, it was Tsimikas who made a naive error that led to the French goal, while in yesterday’s game, it was young Ziolkowski who made the mistake and was substituted by Gasperini after just half an hour. While the defense seems to be the strong point of this team in the league, they are making too many mistakes and lack precision in the Europa League.

Roma, a sterile attack

Another rather evident problem, highlighted by the coach in the post-match interview, is the sterility of the attack. Apart from the Argentine Soulé, who has scored 3 goals in the league, the rest of the attack is struggling to perform.

Dovbyk and Ferguson seem out of place: two physically heavy players, rather clumsy with the ball at their feet, who are struggling to find the back of the net. The Ukrainian was booed off the Olimpico pitch yesterday, and every touch of the ball by the Irishman was met with loud grumbling from the entire stadium.

Dybala scored his first goal of the season from a penalty, but more is expected from him. Finally, Bailey is proving to be in form and able to make an impact, having come on in the last two games and igniting the Olimpico with his plays.

Gasperini must find a solution and hope to mentally recover his two strikers, who currently seem demoralized and disconnected from the team.
